Suwannee River Greenway, Branford Florida
Text and Photos last updated: 2013
Number of times I have biked this trail: 2
Location:
Branford to Fort White, Florida Distance: 21 km (13 miles)
Distance markers: no
Surface: asphalt
Width: 3 metres
Grade: Flat
Conditions of trail:
good to not so good Parking:
Ivey Memorial Park in Branford Water: none on trail
Washrooms: Ivey Memorial Park
Garbage containers: none
Rest Areas: a few benches
Trail marking:
none I have to be honest and say that I am not
sure if I was on the
Suwanneed River Greenway or not. The Trail that I biked on,
did not have ONE
sign indicating a name.
Branford is a small town in northwest
Florida, located on the
Suwannee River. Ivey
Memorial Park is located where the bridge crosses the river. There is ample parking and washrooms
here.
Although it is not too hard to find, you
have to search for the trail and then hope you are on it. There are absolutely no signs indicating that
there
is a trail from the park or anywhere else.
The trail that I found went to
Fort White,
21 km (13 miles) to the east. About
95%!o(MISSING)f the trail runs south of, parallel (and very close) to highway 129/27.
The first one or two km runs further away
from the highway and provides a good amount of shade. The next
13 km (8 miles) that runs beside
the highway provides absolutely not one bit of shade. It appears as if the power company has cut
back everything about 50 metres back
from the trail and left NOTHING standing.
I biked this trail on a warm January
day. I can just imagine trying to bike
here in late spring or summer with no shade whatsoever. The only two benches located on this stretch
offer no relief from the sun.
It appears as if the summer heat has also
played havoc with the asphalt as this part of the trail has many
dips and
mounds in the asphalt and you do have to watch out.
Fortunately there is
some relief. Approximately two thirds of the
way to Fort
White you will find
Ichetucknee Springs State Park. In January I was able to bike in and use the
washrooms but in summer this place apparently is very busy as people rent tubes
and float down the river.
The last 5 km or so offer more shade. I got
as far as Fort White, but apparently
this trail continues further east.
I would only recommend this trail if you happen to be in the area.
