Today we we’re able to sleep in until 6:30 since we didn’t need to have our bags out until 7. Par usual, I heard Amanda shuffling around so I got up a little earlier to get fold my clothes after getting them freshly warmed yesterday and to get ready for a casual 31 mile ride to Jacksonville Beach! I love that in real life, 30 miles would be a good day—but here in Bike & Build it’s a gift! I guess it helps when your only job for the day is to ride your bike...!
We ate some DM’ed bagels instead of going to Maple Leaf (as originally planned by fun committee) and then all met up at Kookaburra Coffee for coffee crew! Aiden’s Dad even sang the song for us while we were eating our bagels! At Kookaburra, I got the Iced Aussie which was amazing ? After snapping some pics of a dream come true and bike & build having coffee crew by the water and palm trees (and even Leash’s jersey being present for it!), I rode out with Ryan, Jana, & Kristi. We enjoyed a flat and beach scenic ride (boo to my GoPro being annoying)
while working on putting together our team’s chant. We’ve had multiple ideas but no flow or consistency so we put together a few ideas and cake up with THE chant! We were pumped to share it with the others!
We had lunch at a beach parking lot where I enjoyed some cheez-its, an icey pop, & filled up on Gatorade. Nutritious I know. Since it was a short day we just wanted to take some photos by the beach and roll on to Jacksonville where we could enjoy the beach without the shams. She shared our chant and started getting people pumped about it for tomorrow morning.
We rode the last 10ish miles to Jax Beach, stopping to chalk a bit along the way. Eager to get to the beach, Jana, Magpie, Kristi, & I hanged into our beach clothes, grabbed the speaker & frisbee, and walked the 4 blocks down to the beach. The water was warm and flat and refreshing! We played frisbee, body floated in the water for a while, and chilled on the beach for a bit and then walked back. Noah was MVP today bc he managed to DM Maple Leaf chicken biscuits
and dessert biscuits for the whole team—including special goat cheese & spinach ones for the vegetarians! They were AMAZING! I’m so glad we decided to wait until Jax to go to Maple Leaf and not needing to pay for them was a huge bonus!!
So happy to have eaten (and maybe a little too full), we grabbed our stuff and shuttled to the local YMCA for nice, long showers we didn’t have to wait for or share. They even had a blow dryer and I was able to blow dry my hair! I’m telling you, it’s all about the little things! Especially since I’ve been struggling with liking my hair since it all got chopped off right before the trip...
Clean, dry, & free—we shuttled back to the host where I worked on DMing bagels from Panera Bread (score!) and then enjoyed a nice meal with the men from the church. I then dipped out on my chore group for dinner crew so I could take my bike to the shop across the street. We stopped in there after the beach and learned they have been working with Bike & Build for 10+ years! They help build the
bikes for SUS and were willing to look over my bike since I’ve been having some bike fitting issues since shipping it down here. They were gracious enough to not charge me for tinkering with my fit so I went ahead and bought a new pair of shams that were on sale to help support their business (& my booty!). My shams are all old and/or not so great so it was a justified purchase if I do say so myself ?
After dinner, I helped repaint the trailer white with Beth, Chris, & NJ, submitted my Safety Nav notes with Michaela, and got ready to go out. NJ, Ryan, Jess, Beth, Chris, & I were headed to Lynch’s Irish Pub where we met up with Kristi & Annie and her friend from childhood. We enjoyed some local brews and local tunes before having to walk home about an hour later due to curfew. It was a nice walk to and from and I was glad we got to see the local area a bit. Tired and prepping for another ride day tomorrow, I crashed hard and was grateful, as always, for another fine day on Bike & Build
