I’ve made it this far, I might as well continue. Today marked the beginning of the second half of the trip. I’m doing a lot better from the start of the trip when I wanted to go home and cry like a baby. How sad would that have been - I wouldn’t even enjoy Las Vegas, let alone the other 300 great things I have done on this trip thus far!
Another great thing to add to the list was to check out Fort Lauderdale’s Museum of Science and Discovery, only after posting a few excess things gained on my trip and some clothes that I no longer needed (and they were clean too, how sweet of me!) Today the humidity was at its extreme so I did well by bringing a change of clothes for the afternoon.
One thing that I didn’t factor in on my trip to the museum was that it was a school day and kids were bound to be here today. Not that I mind them, for I probably had the same enthusiasm as they would, running around and nerding myself up. There was a lot to see here. The bottom level was
On The Beach
This is paradise!!! dedicated to Florida’s Wetlands, a fragile ecosystem that has been greatly dominated by human encroachment. At one stage, beavers were once found this far south! They are long gone, now.
Upstairs, the museum was focusing on space, sound and physics. Ness wanted to come here as I detect she has a ‘slight’ interest in aliens (in case the ornament in her car and all over her flat didn’t tell me that). The school kids are running amok here and it was so tempting to put one of them on the ‘Human Hurricane’, a museum exhibit that encouraged human interaction by spinning yourself on a wheel with your arms stretched out and then bringing them back in, like a hurricane.
Back outside and I had forgotten that I had spent a pleasurable 4 hours in Air Con goodness. I had to adjust to the humidity, which was like a right hook to the face. I also had to give my aching feet a rest. It seems that neither my Nike trainers nor my Kappa trainers are the best for the many miles I’ve have been doing. As soon as I got my walk on, I headed back to the
Looking Out into the Atlantic
I'm sure England isn't too far away in this general direction bust terminal to get a bus back to the hostel. I figured out the BCT (Broward County Transit) bus system, with busses affectionately named “The Buzz”. Can’t say I’ve been stung on any buses today though.
I need to pack my bags now because I’m heading off to Washington, D.C. tomorrow and I won’t have time to pack tonight because I’m heading out for dinner with Nessy and Ishmael. I hurridly pack because there’s a nice reward for my hastiness, which is a swim at the beach across the road from the hostel! The waters here are so warm and tropical. Usually when the ocean water is this warm, you’ve just wet yourself. To me, the water that I observed the other night was a real delight in the daytime. I could spot Miami in the far distance to the south and I knew that if I kept on swimming to the east, I’d end up in Africa somewhere.
Nessy, Ishmael and I were going to a seafood restaurant tonight. They were so nice as to give me a copy of Outkast’s
Idlewild, which I’m sure I’ll listen to in full (I have been tapping my toes to
A1A,,,
Beach Front Avenue! the radio whenever Morris Brown comes on). Ishmael is so obsessed with the idea of fitting in my luggage and going to Australia. I offer him that he can just take the whole damn thing, do the rest of the tour and take my passport. I’ll do anything to live so close to tropical waters like this!
After dinner, we head to the cinemas to watch
Jackass 2. Ishmael knows a friend here and he’s pretty good at getting us in for nix. Once inside the movie is just start to finish funnies. I message my little sister Paula straight after I get out of the cinemas for I am sure she will love this one.
We’re driving back to the hostel and Ishmael still has heaps of questions to ask about Australia. Personally, I’m chuffed that I’m getting asked questions like, “what are the beaches like?” and “what is Sydney like to live in?” as opposed to, “What was knowing Steve Irwin like?”
At the end, I give Nessy a really big hug and farewell the pair. They promise me they’ll come to visit as soon as he gets
that cheque. I can’t wait for my
Dairy Queen Advert
Hadn't thought about Dairy Queen since Portland, mmm, getting hungry! next big cheque, either.
