Very warm today like 15 degrees. Didn't even really need a jacket til late afternoon. Today we decided to again do the touristy thing with the hopon/hopoff bus. So we caught the metro to Central station to get the tickets and start the tour. There were double decker options but the woman said it would leak if it rained and it was drizzling. So went went for the trolley option which is like a tram on wheels.
So she took us to Capitol Building first which we think is like the parliment where are the government meetings are. Its a really old building and we got a free tour of it. Everything is free over here- going up the Washington Memorial yesterday and now this. So the guides like you gotta get there early as the tour sell out early and we got there at 10.15 and shes like is 10.20 okay? Same thing happened yesterday with the Washington Monument they are like you need to get there at 8.30am to get tickets and we got there at 3.50pm yesterday and got on the 4.00 one. So not very busy here round this time of the year. So we started
the tour at Capitol and watched a quick movie then walked around. Some people in our tour had been on it like four times! We werent all that excited as you would imagine. It was nice looking inside the old building and under the dome with all the carvings in the stone.
After capitol we went across the road to the Supreme court- we just missed that tour so had a quick look around and left. We walked back to the other side of Capitol and stood where Obama was inaugurated. Then we walked down to the Air and Space Museum which again was free! Had a look around here- it was pretty cool. Alot of reading- we just walked around and looked at the pictures and objects from space. After this we waited for our trolley and jumped back on. It took us around to the Washington Monumnet and Lincon Memorial which we saw yesterday.
So we caught a connecting trolley to Arlington Cemetry where dad told us to go. We got there at about 1.50 so walked quickly upto the tomb of the unknown soldiers to see the chnage of guard. It was very intense all
the marching, pausing, feet taping and deep voices. After this we walked down to the JFK gravesite. We then went down to the metro and caught the train to the Pentagon to see where a plane crashed into on Sept 11. Had a look at the memorial and where the plane went in. Caught the metro back to Arlington Cemetry and waited for trolley. It was getting late so we just walked and then jogged back over the bridge to Lincon to catch the other trolley to finish the loop.
It dropped us at and uptown tour of DC so we jumped on another trolley and did the loop for about an hour and a half. Went to some massive cathedral. Couldnt hear the tour guide all that well as the trolley was ratteling so much. Got off in Georgetown and walked up the main road looking at the shops. Seemed like a nice place. The last trolley was due at 5.30 so we jumped on the last one back to Central station.
We then looked around the shops and then walked back to our hotel through the main area (or at least we think). This was a
fair walk back but good to see the streets. Went back past the Whitehouse on the other side which was a better view as it was closer to the fence with no trees. Back to the hotel we ordered a pizza and jumped on the net to book the bus and accommodation to Phildelphia. We had another day in Washington down on the itinerary but we have seen enough so will leave tomorrow morning. This will give us an extra night back in New York where all the action is.
