Dear Old & New Readers of our Blog,
We are sitting at Dulles Airport eagerly awaiting our Lufthansa flight which will take us on the next leg of our journey. We are in the company of 49 new friends who are all on this adventure with us. There are 4 seniors counting ourselves, but we are the only couple. We said we could be mom & dad to anyone who needs some TLC. Naturally the majority are newly college grads, more women than men. They all seem very nice, committed, and caring and we are happy to be accepted at our age. We even celebrated our 46th anniversary yesterday and they sang to us ...and gave us chocolate lava cupcakes as a special treat.
We had 2 great days of intense, but fun training about things we need to know about Peace Corps and Tanzania. We opted for room service as an anniversary treat, as we had Mexican food the night before in Georgetown. We tried to go to church in Georgetown, but after walking quite a ways and sitting in an empty chapel, we realized the mass schedule had been changed for summer. A hurried walk and cab ride got us to another church almost in time. we quickly sat down in the back and realized we couldn't understand even one word; all the liturgy was in Korean. I believe we were the only non-speaking Korean attending. But, the mass was very nice, lovely singing, and very friendly people. This, too, is preparing us for our language & cross-culture training. If any of you were told by me that we would be in Dar es Salaam for 3 mo training, change that to 2 days. We then go to Morogoro for 2 days and to Kilosa for 10 weeks of home stay. We have begun anti-Maleria medication and been inoculated for yellow fever. Washington is hot & humid...another getting ready for Africa tactic. Please don't be worried if you don't hear from us regularly; I will blog when I am able to...internet connection & electricity are hoped for, but not guaranteed. With all our love, Dave & Wendy
