Stayed quite a long way outside of D.C. in a place called Cheverly. It's still on the metro system though so caught the train there and then got picked up in the hotel shuttle bus. Good metro system. Using a 'Smartcard' makes most journeys cost around 70 pence.
Only really spent one day in downtown Washington. Walked down past the U.S. Capitol Building and then along the National Mall, which is the long strip with all of the main museums on either side. Most of the museums in Washington are free entry. I visited the National Gallery, the Museuem of Natural History, and the Smithsonian Art Museum. Then I walked up to the Whitehouse. There was a huge protest in progress in the surrounding area, with thousands of people lining the streets. Walked for ages to get to the Lincoln Memorial and then on to the Washington Monument. Visited the Pentagon on my final day but it was rather dull to be honest.
