Day 167……15/09/2012 Well the bike seems to be behaving itself now and we arrived at Bob and Nancy’s house in Clifton Park in New York State last night, it was great to catch up again with Bob after meeting him six years ago while traveling on the fast cat ferry from Portland Maine to Yarmouth in Nova Scotia. His friend Gene also popped over who was also on that trip. We had a few beers and caught up on things and went over a few of the highlights of the ten days or so we spent travelling together.
Bob and Nancy were the proud owners of a newly built house that they had spent a lot of time in the design and building of the property, and a great credit and a lovely home it was too. They took us out and about the pretty countryside that surrounded their home town and finished the day at a great BBQ restaurant by the Mohawk River, called the Dinosaur.
We chatted at length about Bob’s forthcoming six month motorcycling tour of Britain and Europe, but that maybe for after his retirement in 3 or 4 years, anyway I am definitely
up for a part of that
Day 168……16/09/2012 Time once again to say goodbye to more American friends, it’s the only downside of meeting them, but I am sure that we will end up on another great road trip someday where we can repay the fantastic hospitality shown to us.
Today we will ride through New York State and back into Connecticut. The aim is to use as many back roads as possible, as these have been recommended as being very pretty, especially now as the leaves are starting to turn a little more toward the autumn colours. With around 170 miles to cover back to Reg and Elaine’s house, where we will see out the remaining time left to us before our return to normality, whatever that is?.
Day 169……17/09/2012 The ride out today with Reg as our guide took us through some beautiful Connecticut countryside, and passed waterfalls, fantastic homes, and even a ferry ride to get to the Connecticut coast. No matter how many miles we do here, I do not think we will ever tire of the US, and all of the diversity it has to offer. With the sun shining,
and the leaves in this New England paradise turning rapidly now, it made for a great ride today. We ended the day at a local casino which was run by the Mohecan Indians, very lavish, shops for Lynne and pizza for me.
Day 170……18/09/2012 A chill out day today.
Day 171……19/09/2012 We will drive to Boston today for a bit of a sightseeing tour. It is a City that has more than its fair share of history mainly involving the British. We arrived there just after lunch and like most major cities the parking was a little troublesome, we did eventually find an underground space.
Boston is a very old city and some of the buildings reflect the colonial days when much of this region was under the rule of King George I. Well as you know the locals got a little uppity over the rules and regulations, and especially the high taxes that had been imposed. With no form of representation in the British parliament trouble was brewing, the rest is history. We got kicked out, but there were no hard feelings, they threw a tea party for us, and we are all mates
again now.
We took a “Duck” tour of the city and Boston’s busy harbour, the guide was very informative as to the long history and its vibrant and successfully commercial present. There are also an amazing number of traditional Irish Bars here too, oh dear so many bars, so few hours, Lynne was very disappointed, maybe we will have to fly back here in the future.
Day 172……20/09/2012 The four of us will take the car back to Plymouth Massachusetts, where the plan is to catch the boat at noon that will take us out to something Lynne and I had definitely had near the top of our list of things to do while we were here, whale watching. It was a little over a hundred miles to drive from Connecticut and into Rhode Island State, who’s roads left more than a little to be desired, then back into Massachusetts where the roads are slightly better, but there the drivers are hell bent on killing everyone and everything in their paths, but still not as bad as the Canadians.
We arrived in Plymouth in good time to catch he boat, but upon finding out
Boston
A little bit of colonialism in the heart of Boston where to park for the three hour trip we were told that it had been cancelled, they said due to rough waters, but I think that they did not have enough people to make it worthwhile. The decision was made to drive the 70 or so miles to Province Town on the Cape Cod peninsular, where they were running trips, funny that.
I had been to Province Town and gone whale watching from there the last time I was here in 2006. Province Town has more same sex married couples, than anywhere else in the US outside of San Francisco, or so I was told by the chap in the Laura Ashley blouse the last time I was here.
The whale watching trip was not until 4pm so we had an hour or so to look around the, how should I put it, the more colourful side of P towns, shops and inhabitants.
The whale watching was simply amazing, after around an hours sailing out into the Atlantic we began seeing lots of humpbacks of all sizes, we spent a further hour just moving from group to group. The Biologist on board gave an on going commentary
about the life and habits of these enormous mammals, she knew nearly all of them by name, as they all had identifying marks and returned to virtually the same place every year.
The drive to see the whales was well worth the effort, even the 175 miles back to Connecticut.
Day 173……21/09/2012 A decision was made to relax today, and so after a run around in Reg’s truck to do some chores, that’s what we did. Trying not to think about the pending end to our most fantastic trip.
