Before we left Arizona for the west coast we made a stop in Flagstaff for a little replacement on our had-been taped up muffler. And what a place to do it—on route 66! Our new shiny part carried us across the desert of Arizona and California. We saw such a variety of cacti and desert flowers along the way.
Our first stop in southern Cal was San Marcos near Escondido and San Diego. From the moment we stepped out of the car the fresh smells of grass and tropical flowers greeted us. We stayed with friends we'd met in China who have started Christian Audio and echristian (check them out online and download this month's free audio book:
The Hiding Place by Cori TenBoom! ). We had a really fun visit with them, their two boys and daughter. The kids bonded instantly and enjoyed playing in the yard or racing cars on wii. The next day we got a tour of Christian Audio and went sailing on the San Diego Bay...what great field trips! Not only did we get to watch the robotics involved in cd replication, meet the people who make Christian Audio happen, and get loaded up with audio books (we are currently
listening to Peace Child as we drive and I type this) we got to learn how to sail, learning all kinds of nautical terms like jib and tack, and helping to steer and work the rigging.
Our next stop was Pepperdine and Malibu to see a roommate from Liberty days. We got a tour of Pepperdine before having a lunch of calm chowder, fish and chips, and a scallop and tomato salad, all the while overlooking the beautiful palm-lined beaches. Afterwards we had a great time catching up on the beach while the kids dug trenches and splashed in the chilly water.
From there we drove the hillside coastal roads to Ventura where we stopped in to see Gospel Light. After that we stopped by an In and Out burger place (just so we could tell Mark B that we've been there!) then on to the home of the CEO of
Gospel Light . Their beautiful home is up on a hill in the midst of an avocado grove. We were greeted and taken into the grove along with their avocado-eating black lab to pick a few pieces of green fruit as well as a few lemons. Later we were
treated to a dip in their hot tub under the stars.
In the morning we trekked to the Reagan Presidential Library. Now, excuse my ignorance (I speak for myself, the wife, only) I had no idea that a presidential library was actually more like a museum and not rows of books. It was truly quite interesting to learn more about the president of our childhood and to share it with our children. In the afternoon we played by the beach and grilled hamburgers. What a perfectly American day!!!
