Ok today was my 24th birthday and I had a really nice day. As we couldn’t get to Alcatraz yesterday we went this morning. So caught the tram down to pier 33 and jumped on board the ferry to Alcatraz. Alcatraz is a small island situated about 2k's off San Fran and was used as a prison from 1930's to 1960's.
We did a tour of the prison with a set of head phones on which was interesting as they walked you through the prison explaining what was what and what happened where. It was hard to imagine that we were standing in the same places as these criminals 40 yrs ago, Their ceils were tiny and consisted of a toilet, sink and a wire bed- not much fun. They explained how people tried to escape and swim to the foreshore. We really enjoyed the tour and glad we made the trip.
Next we caught the Cable car to Chinatown. Its that tram thing that u hang off. It was good, got extremely close to the cars on the oppposite side of the road so made sure u didn’t lean out or else you would have been collected! A
couple of guys next to us decided to jump of while it was in motion and one of them face planted into the concrete road- pretty funny but dam stupid and it would of hurt.
Then we went for a walk to Chinatown- very Chinatownish. Dad told me to go and buy a steak sandwich from Arby's nearChinatown so we walked a few blocks to the address which was actually a Starbucks! Apparently there are no Arby's in San Fran. So we went to the pub next door for lunch.
We had the avo left and I wanted to do something different. So we hired a Go-Car. Small 2 person wide scooter thing. It was sooooo much fun and we finally got to drive on the roads well the wrong side of the road and obey American road rules- so we enjoyed turning right on a red light and had to wait in the middle of the intersection to turn left. I was freaking out when it was my turn to drive I'm like Benn which side of the road do I need to end up on when I turn, very funny. So Benn drove to the Golden
Gate bridge and then I drove back via Lombard St which is a very windy and steep red brick road- lots of fun. So we eventually made it back safely to the rental place.
Went back to the hotel and got changed into fancy clothes as Benn had booked dinner at a fancy restaurant. So we walked down and as we were walking saw one of those drains like from Ninga Turtles and steam was coming out- so i did i best impression of Marylin Munroe. Neway we ended up at the Bankers building and went up the elevator to the 52nd floor where we had a very pricey and flash 3 course meal with views of San Fran which was very nice.
Back at the hotel now and we have an 8am flight tomorrow to Hawaii for our final leg of the holiday- our cruise around the Hawaiian Islands!!!! (Yay) Not sure if we have internet access so this may be the last blog but will try and update on our cruise if we get a chance.
