The end of Route 66The end of Route 66The end of Route 66

Plaque marking the end of Route 66 in Santa Monica, LA
We got up Saturday at 5.30am to go out and watch the football (Me and Nige did anyway!) then found the plaque that is placed at the end of route 66. Nipped back to the hotel and then all 3 us of did a tad more shopping before taking a drive to Malibu beach, and then onto Long beach, where (as recommended by Nige) we checked into the (haunted) Queen Mary.

But, before we actually got to check in Nige and Katie had been winding each other up with ghost stories etc, Sooo we entered the lift to go up to the Reception level, and the doors closed, and although it felt like we were moving we actually stayed exactly where we were - 3 attempts later and amongst the giggles we chose to vacate that lift and go in the adjacent one, which worked perfectly. Checked in, then got in a totally different lift to go to our floor, the doors give you about 2 seconds to get in the lift - Katie (already feeling anxious) went in first and the doors began closing, she managed to stop them to allow us in, then when we reached our floor,

Part of the TV programme showing the hauntings of the Queen Mary
and myself and Nige got out, they began to close, leaving Katie in the lift!! She again managed to get out although getting her case trapped! We arrived at our room in one piece and took a look around, Nige in the mean time put on the TV, This done Katie no good at all, it showed a channel dedicated to the haunting of the Queen Mary. I had a feeling Katie would not be leaving my side at this point. As we left the room to take a look around the ship, we closed the bedroom door and then went to go back in but it was locked - at this point it scared the living daylight out of us! We unlocked it with the key and could see no evidence of anything unusual but left to carry on our tour, not leaving each others sides! We got ourselves a couple of ghost books on the Queen Mary to read on the flight home, then boarded a bus that takes you to the harbour opposite the queen Mary.

We had a very pleasant stroll around, spotted a seal swimming by and ate dinner in a seafood restaurant, then

headed back to the bar on the ship. There was actually a 'fright night' happening, based in and around the Queen Mary as well as midnight tours around the ship. We went back to our room, and packed ready for our flight home then got into bed. Little did we know we would'nt get much sleep, There were screams, laughter, babies crying etc - Mainly from the tours up and down the corridor, though I'm not sure about the baby crying.

We awoke this morning (Sunday) all safe and well! We toured the boat (not as scary in daylight!) and then loaded the car and made our way to the airport. Dropping the car off was easy, 3552 miles in total - 3500 by Nige! Then as we queued I noticed next to our flight it had 'Cancelled' Nige and Katie thought I was joking, then we all noticed the commotion at the desks. In the end we were basically told it would be a 24 hour delay, A night in a hotel with dinner and breakfast and free return flights to any of their destinations, well not bad I guess, only trouble being - work - Katie's 2nd
