It's still beautiful here. Getting warmer but if you stay out of the direct midday sun you're good. Humidity is low here and there's always a breeze - well at least since I've been here. And the breeze was gusting at the beach. Yep. I went back to Progreso. I love it there, too. Met some folks from Canada that were on vacation and touring the Yucatan. Speaking English!!!! Sooooooo, I met up with them again on Saturday night and we went out on the town. Taxied to the downtown area (keep telling y'all there's no where to park), went to the Noche Mexiana which is a big park / festival area at the end of Paseo de Montejo and watched the performances of folkdancing. What a show! So colorful and musical ! The we taxied ... read more

Thanks to some wonderful help and hand drawn maps (once again) from Diana at the office, I found the store! I have been passing it and going around it all these times. It's on the avenue with all the mansions so it is not designed to look like a Walmart at all and has construction going on so it really doesn't even look like a store. The entrance is a discreet driveway that puts you in an underground garage (and you pay to park at Walmarts here, folks.). Inside, exactly what you'd imagine for a Walmart's in Mexico. Same look inside as in Texas, just a little more crowded. Some things the same, some different. And guess what else! They had a bottle of Jack Daniels!!!! I've been deprived these last three weeks (well, I bought ... read more

It's just about 10:00 p.m. and I'm home and about to go to bed. Was waiting for a phone call that's not going to come (don't y'all feel sorry for me?). I've cooked and put up (in the freezer since I can't find Walmart's and am buying in bulk) ground meat and bacon tonight. Even made lunch to last the rest of the week. Sad, huh? No, I had a great day today at the office. Talked with Nancy on the phone earlier tonight and she's not ready (yet) to kill anyone over the fact that's they're having their third child's wedding this month (which makes 3 weddings in a little over a year!!!). I'll be coming home for that wedding weekend after next (short trip). Don't get ideas friends. I only go to weddings to ... read more

I did it! I drove to Progreso yesterday! It's a straight shot there and back from Merida. The beach was great and really not crowded. People started coming around 11:00 but there's plenty of beach. I ate a fried fish and it was wonderful and huge! Hey, Debbie, head, eyes and all were on the platter! They fried it whole. Would feed two people. Then last night I found (kinda) downtown. Lots of people on the street but I didn't find any bands playing. It may have been too early. Anyway it was raining and thundering so I came home. So far, rain here has been just big fat drops, not like the downpours at home. My driving confidence is way up there now. I may even try to find Walmart's today. ... read more

No, nothing bad is happening. In fact all good. I've been busy all morning at work. Stopped to get a hamburger, or whatever the little lady that serves me calls it, since she doesn't speak English and me no español, and successful used the bank's ATM machine (cajero). Boy, you need to be quick though. It doesn't like to wait on you. Will just kick you out! I was slow the first time trying to make sure whether it was asking me how much I wanted and if it was dollars or pesos. Turns out to be pesos, and I was too slow the second time to get a receipt.. Oh, well. Back to work now. Patt... read more

Yesterday I took the afternoon off to explore (a little). What an ego builder for me. I drove to the mall (found it, found my way through it, found my way away from it) then went to the DHL office many miles away. Getting the hang of driving here. Let me tell you about the mall although I can't tell you the name of it. Actually it was only about 2 blocks from the office and I'm told it's one of the largest malls in Mexico. Supposedly the Galleria (as in Houston) is to build a mall here in Merida soon also. This mall was just like in the states. Big stores, little store, vendors in the middle, little pricey. Otherwise, nicest dressed people! No slouches anywhere. DHL: No English but we're best friends now. Poor ... read more

Hello to all and this is only a beginning of a journal. I am fine. This city is beautiful, clean and so friendly. I should have learned (or remembered) a little Spanish before I came here, but who would have guessed that it would be so quick! I'm not sure I want it to end in a couple of months! I read Spanish more than I can speak it, but then I can read French and Italian when I want to also. I have worked all day and some this evening so I'm tired now. I will try to make a real journal for all to see of my 'adventures'. Love to all. Patt... read more

Yesterday I jogged on to the beach and went swimming before taking my plane at 1pm. Then I took the local "Ryanair" flight to Mexico. So: I landed 1.5 hours from the city, had to take a bus to town, but ofcource way out of public transport, so I had to walk and then take the Metro, all this with Backpack and at rush hour, The metros are reallllllyyyyy packed at rush hour people push themselves into the metro and the doors give the last push, ummmfff! So by the time I got to the Hotel it was 7pm! Yesterday, I must say I was a bit down, a bit lonely, fed up that everything is expensive ... read more
