The flight from Portlad to Houston was relatively uneventful. Mia behaved as well as can be expected for an almost two year old at midnight. Thankfully we had a young couple seated next to us and not some uptight senior citizen to chastize me on manners and children these days. Continental now offers DirecTV during your flight for a mere $6. I tried to sleep as best I could but it wasn't pretty and the layover in Houston didn't help. Upon arrival in Mexico City, I will need to pass off my child and attempt a nap. Thankfully, the flight from Houston to Mexico City addressed the issue of the FM-T visa that we need because we're staying in Mexico beyond the "border zone". Our State Department mentions the visa but when I called Continental to ... read more

Day 815 (23.06.09) With the comfort of our homely setting of Kate and Danny's flat it was hard to tear ourselves away but after a nice brekkie we left the apartment to find out what Mexico City had to offer us. Jumping on the tube we made our way south(ish) to the Coyoacan area home to some historical, cultural and horticultural sites. We started off with the large park in Coyoacan which is not only a great place to stroll but is also the nursery for a lot of the Botanical parks and gardens in the city. Not long after stepping foot in the park we were confronted by loads of curious squirrels who were quite happy scuttling within feet of us. Progressing through the park we reached the central 'plaza' and were amazed to find ... read more

So, after a fab dinner in the Condesa neighbourhood last night, in an extremely veggie friendly restaurant (in a working book shop, very funky and the fact that it was mine and Dara's first experience of mole - delicious) we again headed back for an early night (it's tiring work sitting on a tour bus all day long I'll have you know!) So bright and early this morning, up I got to find another fabulous day's weather (the BBC weather forecast really need sorting out, it's torrential rain according to them). Once ready, we sauntered off to the metro (first time on it last night, very excited, that's another one for my 'try and ride every underground system in the world' list ticked off. How anal am I?) to join the overhead train to Xochimilco, also ... read more

This morning we caught the ADO bus, first class, back to Mexico City. Initially they couldn´t get the DVD machine working, so they announced that we had a choice to wait another half hour for another bus. Everyone shouted, "No" and then clapped when the bus backed up and started down the highway. The trip is 6 hours and goes through the greatest variety of cactus in all of Mexico. At times it was like driving through a forest of cactus some of it in bloom. I was quite sad yesterday, anticipating leaving Oaxaca City, it is such a beautiful and clean colonial city. In contrast as we approached Mexico city, the sides of the highways were littered with garbage, bottles, plastic, etc. Every night in Oaxaca city the sweepers would be out sweeping the parks ... read more

Pak prisly zovialni, hlucne a vsechny do jedne skarede letusky American Airlines.

Well, have now arrived in the big MC and it´s not so scary but it is as big as imagined and kinda crowded and kinda tiring... There´s so much to see and do that even though I´m staring down the barrel of my last night and half day in Mexico having arrived last Thursday night I don´t even feel like I´ve started scratching the surface. I do like this city. It´s not your sanitised northern European capital that´s for sure but it still offers everything that a capital in northern Europe does and then some. Some say it offers dirt, grime, and possibly more than it´s fair share of crime but that certainly hasn´t been our experience. We´ve found the people have been ever so friendly and helpful, the streets well, a little dirty, the metro, ... read more
