Hola, Tonight we'll lay our heads down in Hotel Centra, Ocosingo, Mexico, which is the first place in two weeks that is a little off the beaten track. The two weeks in Mexico have not disappointed us, however being off the tourist route today has been fantastic. Ocosingo is a halfway point between Palenque and San Cristobal at about 110 kms south from Palenque. The journey in the collectivo (Toyota Hi Ace that seats up to around 17 people) took about 2 1/2 hourson winding roads through lush green jungle clad hills/mountains....... fabulous. Within an hour of arriving in Ocosingo we were heading 12kms on another collectivo to the Mayan ruins off Tonina. This is the fourth Mayan ruins site we have visited and throughly enjoyed walking to the top of the 71 metre high pyramid. ... read more

In Palenque ... read more

This trip evolved in an unusual way, mainly because trying to find transportation between cities without airports, or that weren’t connected directly by airports, was problematic. One place that everyone says you need to visit, if you want to see the best Maya cities, is Palenque. Palenque does have an airport, but it only has flights twice a week, and mostly to Mexico City. That’s not too much of a problem if you happen to be coming or going on one of those days, and if the transfer in Mexico City is short or not exorbitant. I had neither of those options. As you all saw yesterday, I took a transport van/minibus from Flores, Guatemala, to Palenque, Mexico. All 7.5 hours of it. Today was another of those long-travel days, but not for the same reason. ... read more

When trying to arrange a bus from San Cristobal to Palenque we were faced with the news that there are protests blocking the road. We had 2 options - take a bus that went around, taking 8hrs instead of 5, or pay more and go on an organised tour to Palenque, and attempt getting through. After much discussion translated from Spanish to English and back again, we understood that this option would attempt the route, as there was no knowing until we got there if it would be closed that day, but if it were closed we'd be taken to different ruins then back to San Cristobal. We were unsure which option to take - as we need to travel to Palenque to continue on our route to the coast. After a bit of debate, as ... read more

HE SAID... Today we were travelling southwest from Merida to Palenque. We woke early, as we had an eight hour bus trip ahead, and we needed to leave for the bus station at 8am. We headed down to the hotel breakfast area around 7am and had coffee, watermelon, toast and pastries. We checked out of Hotel Reforma at 8am, jumped into a taxi and headed to Merida’s bus station. We checked in our bags, boarded the luxury bus (i.e. recliner seats, leg room and toilets) at 8:30am and settled in for the long day of travel ahead. We were leaving the Yucatan Peninsula and heading into the region of Chiapas. We drove along the Gulf of Mexico for a while, and then headed back inland. The landscape was predominantly rural forest, with numerous burn-offs coming right ... read more

Today was another long 9 hr day with a relatively short 220 km trip to Palenque firstly stopping at the normally shimmering blue pools and waterfalls of Agua Azul. Slow trip due to more winding roads dropping nearly 2000 mtrs from misty mountain forests through rain forests almost to sea level all the while negotiating over 600 speed bumps along the way to slow cars as they pass through small indigenous communities. All the way the temperature was increasing as we descended. These villages are very poor & not well looked after by either the state or federal government's & survive on growing their own corn, beans & raising chickens. Education is only to primary level. Agua Azul waterfalls are know for their turquoise colour which comes from the limestone-rich content of the water however recent ... read more

Got into Palenque this morning at 0630hrs after the over night bus. We only got woken up once by some military personnel checking passports; they didn't want us so we got through fine. We had the breakfast we bought for the bus ride and headed to our hostel, just a short walk. We spent a little time there locking up our things and researching. We decided to take the colectivo to the ruins right around 8. It wasn't hard to find the colectivos to the 'ruinas' on 3a Poniente Norte (Allende) just north of Central Poniente (Benito Juárez). For MXN20 they would get us the 7 kms to the ruins. It cost MXN30.50 to enter the national park, and an additional MXN64 to get into the ruinas themselves. There were yet again guides, but as always ... read more

Palenque town is compact with lots of places to stay and eat and easy minibus access to Palenque ruins. Not much else around aside from crafts as far as I could tell. Spent 3 nights, 2 would have been better but I was frazzled after 2 all day journeys in 3 days, first from Lanquín to Sayaxché then Sayaxché to Palenque. After Palenque I hit the Caribbean Coast at Playa del Carmen and the nearby ruins at Tulum which were not impressive and today the ruins at Ek' Balam near Valladolid which were very cool and not mobbed like Tulum most likely owing to the fact that's it's a bit of a production to get there but well worth it.
