Tijuana
Part II
We were afraid. After listening to CNN, Fox news, and all the American brainwashing, we thought that traveling to Mexico was an insane idea. But the drug trafficking, kidnappings, and dead bodies didn’t stop us, we decided to take the risk and figure out what Tijuana is all about.
We didn’t take a break when we arrived at my cousins’ place, I met several cousins I didn’t even know I had--we Mexicans have a big familia. My cousins were very kind. They took care of us all the time. We talked and talked until my eyes couldn’t stay open anymore, so I went directly to bed hoping to see more about Tijuana the next morning.
Tijuana is cold in the night time. It's freezing in the night because my cousins don’t have AC, which is pretty common in Mexican houses since the weather is so nice in the day time. Bai and I woke up about 10 a.m., most of my family members were gone for work, so we went to the kitchen, made some coffee, and drank it while we watched the crazy morning traffic. The refreshing breeze and the warm sunshine
was so good that we wanted to stay there forever, but our bellies were hungry, so we decided to take a trip to the taco stand a block away from
la casa.
My cousin Arely, a girl of 13 years old who goes to la Secundaria in the afternoon, offered to take us to the taco stand. Bai and I were hoping to taste some real tacos and nothing better than a taco stand. In the taco stand several ladies made tortas and tacos while another girl picked up the money. The tacos were delicious. The tortillas are handmade too. So the tortilla has a high quality of softness and flavor. They sell tacos of lengua, al pastor, suadero, cabeza, and oh god! I’m getting hungry just to think about the tacos.
After our taco experience, we went back to la casa and my cousins who took us to the Playas Tijuana. We went on a Wednesday, the weather was cold and the beach was empty. My primas told me that on the week days the beach is usually empty, but in the weekends it’s pretty busy, plus during this season of the year since is cold, not
coco loco
Spicy but delicious, although Bai couldn't eat it. a lot of people hang out on the beach.
We bought two coconuts. Bai bought a regular coconut and my aunt Licha bought a coco loco which is a coconut with a bunch of spicy stuff on it! Mexicans love to put a little bit of spicy in their lives and that included their coconuts. Unfortunately, Bai didn't want to eat it since his stomach can’t handle that much spicy.
On the way back, we saw the contrast between the poor and the rich, the Great Wall of Mexico (US-Mexico Border Fence), bunch of old vochitos flying like racing cars, and a rooster walking down the street. We asked our cousins about all the violence and fear that we heard from the news.
“That’s old news. Back in 2008 there was a drug battle between el Chapo and los Zetas, but el Chapo won and los zetas left. Since then, Gringos stopped coming to Tijuana because of fear.” Lidia explained to us while driving her van, “Even back then, it wasn’t like the news tell you, usually the fighting was among drug cartels outside the city, if you are inside Tijuana and you’re not hanging out with the wrong people, you are fine.”
That day we ate pollo loco (rotisserie chicken) at home. The cool thing about rotisserie chicken is that you don’t have to order the whole chicken; you can order the chicken's parts you want, like legs or breast. Again, I stayed late night with aunts and cousins talking about memories, personal stories, and family secrets--I felt back at home.
