Left Watson Lake. Very small town and everything in town closes down at 8 pm. Went to ck in to a very unique hotel which I will explain but since it was 7:45 pm the owner asked me if I had eaten yet, and since I had not told me we better go quick. Went to the only restaurant in town, Kathy's Kitchen and awesome home cooking. So good in fact we went back the next morning for breakfast The hotel, Air Force Lodge was an old air force barracks that was remodeled. Room had 2 single beds and that was the room. Down the hall was the mens shower room and next door was the mens rest room. Here is the info and history http://airforcelodge.com/ Very cool place and we met awesome people from all ... read more

It is safe to say that Yukon was, and still everyday is, one hell of a surprise for me. I don’t really know what I was expecting; anyway my hopes fell short. Larger than life is not a false statement. Maybe it’s the people. Having a smaller population, recluse, but not entirely of the crazy ‘civilized’ world might explain some aspects of it. For the seasons and the ecosystems are so much more capricious here than anywhere else I have seen, the people have learn to respect them more. Being aware of the energy it takes to produce quality, in food as in music, coffee and everything is a normal thing. Everything is of astonishing quality; everything that is local, anyway. Also I have never seen such a big concentration of outdoor enthusiasts. They run, half ... read more

We woke up to another nice blue sky morning. Today is supposed to be in the mid 60s. Since the local restaurant was closed for the holiday, we had breakfast in our units and pulled out of Watson Lake at 8:15. Incidentally Watson Lake with the population of 1,700 is the second largest town in the Yukon. Whitehorse, the capital and where we are heading today is just 25,000. The total population of the Yukon Territory is only 36,000. So….lots of elbow room. The drive to Whitehorse was rather mundane as the scenery did not compare to what we have been seeing. This stretch of the Alaskan highway is so remote that the infrequent approaching car waves. Although, another black bear just lumbered across the highway in front of us--they're really amazing! Interestingly, we have not seen ... read more

Well, last night and this morning we got our first rain since the Dakota's, and it was kind of nice hearing it on the RV. Luckily, it let up by the time we got up, although it remained overcast. We've got our fingers crossed that it will clear this afternoon for our Ferry ride across Taiya Inlet to Haines, AK, then up the Haines highway back to the AlCan highway. As we did not have to be at the Ferry until 1:30 pm, we had very relaxed morning, catching up on our laundry and straightening up the RV. Ray found a scrub brush on a pole and bucket and washed the front end of the RV. It was caked with bugs, and was rather gross. We moved the RV's to the Ferry staging area around 10:30, ... read more

From Anchorage, we headed back into Canada and the Yukon Territory. First night, we camped at Beaver Creek, and last night at Otter Creek Campground in Haines Junction. Photos here pretty much document that journey, including dusty bumpy roads (LOTS of frost heaves; hard on rig and people). This is driving-most part of trip as we are trying to make time through some pretty isolated (and tough going) areas on our way to Stewart-Hyder area. We are averaging 200+ miles each day. I will be glad for some downtime, hopefully coming soon. The six of us played cards in our rig last night; and a great time was had by all. This is much better than traveling alone.... read more

With the dogs all buckled in their seatbelts and a day full of bright clear sunshine we headed out. The temperature was a little chilly (41 degrees) but we are getting used to it being cold in the morning and hot in the afternoon. The last few days there has been a 30 - 40 degree difference between early morning and later afternoon temps so knowing how to dress is interesting. The beginning of today's drive was no different than yesterday, slow and bumpy. I took some pictures of the frost heaves so you can see why we would go no faster than 35 mph during these stretches. Given the first 75 miles of the day we were not sure we could make the planned 200 miles today, but all of a sudden the road changed. ... read more

SEPTEMBER 5 … yesterday and today have both been joyous days with cloudy-foggy-rainy weather … great alaskan weather, however, not conducive to photography, thus ansel adams and his sister marilyn won’t be sharing any pictures … plus that we have no wi-fi, though this campground advertises wi-fi … SATURDAY … we drove the first 35 miles of the denali highway and as we suspected only far enough on the gravel to turn around … the denali highway is above the tree line and tundra … we saw hunters everywhere but nary a caribou … the tundra was in purple and reds … as we suspected the blueberry bushes give the tundra that purplish color in the early fall … even with a papacy of sun it was stunningly beautiful … it is difficult to describe … ... read more

DAY 11 … yesterday was fabulous … driving in the mountains of British Colombia all day … the roadside vegetation has been cut back about 50 yards from the center line … this was done, we suspect, for the major purpose of protecting wildlife … our three eagle eyes only spotted 1 caribou yearling along side the road eating dirt … perhaps they salt the road in the wintertime as we figure the yearling was really after salt … Last night we camped at laird hot springs provincial park … it is a 600 meter walk back to the hot springs on an elevated wooden walkway … the water ranged from hot 130 degrees in the hot end to a comfortable 105 below the waterfall … I hope to post pictures … if we have a ... read more

Well, we're now in the Kluane National Park (it's pronounced "Clue Arnie", in case you were wondering!). And blooming marvelous it is too. But before we get to that... Since I last published a blog, we spent a couple of days in the capital of the Yukon, Whitehorse. A surprisingly nice little town given that it's in the middle of nowhere. The town is sort of on two levels. The downtown area is at the bottom of the hill next to the Yukon River. The remainder of the town is on the top of the hill above it. Needless to say that our RV park was on the top of the hill. So we decided to cycle down into town; with a Force 10 gale helping us. Which was all very well, until we needed to ... read more

Tuesday, Really nice weather today, though really windy this afternoon. Finally got to see some wildlife today - - one coyote, several swans, including two adults that we saw on the way up with 4 signets that hatched since we came by on the way up, and bright iridescent blue dragon flies. The coyote was a female that had obviously just had a litter - - she was on the road begging for a handout. We also had really nice vistas of high mountains in the distance - - tough to get good pictures, but we tried. We had several delays due to construction and one stretch when we had to follow a motor grader doing ALMOST 5 mph for a couple miles (seemed more like 5 miles!) At one of the construction sites in the ... read more
