Fort Frances Travel Blogs

Background: A land of vast distances and rich natural resources, Canada became a self-governing dominion in 1867 while retaining ties to the British crown. Economically and technologically the nation has developed in parallel with the US, its neighbor to the south across an unfortified border. Canada's paramount political problem is meeting public demands for quality improvements in health care and education services after a decade of budget cuts. The issue of reconciling Quebec's francophone heritage with the majority anglophone Canadian population has moved to the back burner in recent years; support for separatism abated after the Quebec government's referendum on independence failed to pass in October of 1995.

Heading Towards Dryden Wednesday, 8 August 2007 Although my ride yesterday had been really quite enjoyable, I wasn’t sure I felt like having Bob drop me off where he’d picked me up, so that I could ride another 60 kilometres away from Fort Frances, meaning he’d have to travel 120 km to return to pick me up. On that ride I’d noticed another highway, #502, which travels north from highway 11, heading towards Dryden, which is about 200+ kilometres away. I thought I’d maybe give it a try, and, when Bob spoke with Darell this morning about our dinner plans, Da [View Full Entry]

Flying Along 11 Tuesday, 7 August 2007 Today it was cloudy, windy & rain threatened to affect my ride. Just in case there were problems with the road & weather, I took Silver, who is a bit better equipped for those conditions. Also, there is a bridge & causeway connecting Fort Frances to the “mainland”, and I was somewhat hesitant to ride over it with the winds blowing. Good thing, too, because there was virtually NO extra space on the roadway there for a bicycle, especially one that might be blown into the path of a vehicle coming from behind. It’s [View Full Entry]

Return to the Fort Monday, 6 August 2007 Today we left our temporary home at Lakeview, heading south towards Fort Frances. For myself the plan was to cycle from the point where I stopped yesterday to the hotel where we were booked - NOT the same place as in June! My bicycle of choice was Blue, as I’d used Silver quite a bit lately. The bicycle felt really light, easy to “push”, and I enjoyed it immensely, although, as usual, the traffic was sometimes a bit “scary”, especially in spurts on Highway 11. The skies clouded up as I was approaching [View Full Entry]

A DUMP & SEEING A FRIEND Friday, 15 June ‘07 Today we let Panna have another walk thru the woods, minus the swim (it was almost chilly, considering how hot it had been on Thursday), then continued on to Fort Frances. Again, we saw beautiful lakes & rivers & insanely huge hills. Even some of the transport trucks, those which were carrying heavy loads, were struggling to reach the top, and imagine how it must have felt to keep all that under control on the descent. East of Thunder Bay the scenery was a bit less “exciting”, though it will be [View Full Entry]
