Being a street artist back in New Zealand, I am always interested what the art is like in a new town. I was wandering around but couldnt really see anything, so went with a friend around and just asked the first skater or person that looked like a skater. Appearantly, there was a skate park with heaps of graffiti at the PNE somewhere. We had no idea where it was, asked a bit around, also what the hell is the PNE, took a bus and saw the big fair (PNE). Walked around crossed the bridge, found the big overbridge they told us about and there we were at Leith side. A friend told me the story of Leith side later:
It is an old tunnel that was supposed to be used for buses to stop. However, it was never used for this, so a guy (I wish I'd remebered his name) decided to do something for the youth (aka lets get the kids off the street) and built a provisional skate park, some wooden ramps etc in this tunnel. A couple of years later, the guy got killed in front of a bar in downtown Vancouver. People started to draw huge murals all around the place. This was during a time, when skaters and BMX bikers hated each other, so one day the bikers came, and burnt the wooden ramps to the ground and overpainted lots of the murals. But it wasn't over,
the skaters came back and this time they built the ramps out of cement. Now when you come to leith side, you see lots of great freestyle, some tags, some murals are still left. Some douchebag drew little shitty ying-yang symbols over everything, and there are some very few stencils. I forgot my camera that day (yeah I know!) so you wont find any pics in the gallery.
I scouted the area a little bit more, and found some nice stencils in Victoria, some interesting tagging in Vancouver, and lots of throw ups here and there. Even saw some tagging and really shit throw ups in Tofino. Also found lots and lots of grey walls that just wait to be painted. So, you should give it a shot.
