Being known as a party animal and social butterfly back home, I am very keen checking the local party scene on my travels. I went to a couple of house parties, ranging from potlucks, cellar dance parties with Ryan mixing some rad tunes in Victoria to full blown dinner parties for thanks giving. In Vancouver I went to the Biltmore around Main and Broadway. Entry was ok with $10 but I was very unhappy when the place closed
at 2am in the morning. I remember dancing around in my own world, looking around, seeing boys making out with girls, girls with girls or boys with boys and smiling, being happy to live in a world and be in a place where this is accepted and everyone can be happy. Gay pride is very present in Vancouver. Back in town some of my friends shot a video for the "it is getting better project", check it out here if you like:
Last week I went to an underground semi-legal club around the waterfront in downtown Vancouver. Some dubstep was playing, entry again around $12 dollar and an adventure to get there after having smoked a bit and still unfamiliar with
the bus and metro system. This party was pretty sweet, good tunes and a big crowd dancing. Unfortunately, you have to pay for every club you go to and it is at least $10 which makes it quite a rare occasion.
The best party so far (and I don't think there is a lot of potential to change this in the near future) was the invite only rave on Saturna last week. Again, I stayed with friends of friends and got invited to come to this little gulf island on a Saturday. I was back in Vancouver and it was a mission just to get there. All the
way with busses and trains to Tawwassen station, from there I took a ferry to Swartz Bay on the island and then another one to Saturna. The last part in the middle of the night, no idea where I was going. By then I had met up with other people going to the "potluck rave".
Actually there were about 20 of us and 2 other passengers who had no idea where these weed smoking hippies emerged from. Of course I came totally unprepared, no alcohol at all. But that was not a problem, everyone was keen handing me there homebrew, vodka, gin, whisky, mixed drinks and heaps to smoke. Arriving there I was in party mode already. I met up with my new mates from Victoria found myself in a car and some minutes later I was standing in front of a huge cabin sourrounded by tents, a fire pit and many many happy faces. Going inside I saw a band of 6 people playing, people dancing around. I pitched my tent somewhere in the dark and went back inside. The band was gone and instead DJs started playing. I thought back at the crappy transitions at Sammy's every single time I went there, and here I was with 50 people that I had never seen before, and some of the best electro I have ever listend to. Even the Vancouver clubs could not compete with this.
And more, it was an amazing location, a beach fire a bit down the cabin, and forest around us. Some unlucky yacht owners had decided to stay the night in this normally quiet bay. I think they had no idea what hit them. Imagine a rave in the middle of nowhere, one moment you think you found a quiet retreat, the next moment you have a rave and tent city on your hand. Poor very rich people. The bass was so intense that the entire house vibritated.
I danced for hours....later sitting down I leaned against the wall, enjoying the vibriations. By that time everyone was tripping balls on shrooms, K, MDMA, acid, take your pic, a mass of half naked people swirling there arms around, happy dancing or staring at the lights all in their own world and free as if noone watched. It went on like this until the morning. Then we all met again, the DJs replaced by Wilson playing the sitar, everyone passing out lying on the floor, just to get up eventually and sharing a big breakfast with pancakes, bacon, eggs, real maple sirup. I left for Victoria later that day, I came there not knowing
anyone, I left having more friends, what a gig!
