Rossland Winter Carnival
Some of the bobsleds got up to 85 km/h. As you can imagine there was lots of carnage Finally we have started to get this blog site updated, so for anyone that is interested hopefully we will continue to put entries up… and if you cant be bothered to read the blogs the photos may be more interesting.
The last 6 months were spent trying to get some money together too continue this trip. We made our way from Mexico to San diego for a week and then up to Canada where we both got work visas. We bought a GMC safari Van and made our way to look for a nice snow town to do the snow season and work. We had a few different options but came across one town that was rather small but very cute and just seemed to stick out as the place to set up base for a while. We planned to be there for about 3 to 4 months but 6 months later we felt like we were at home and packing up and getting back on the road was hard. We both don’t think we could have found a better place to live in Canada.
We found a little one bedroom apartment only 5 mins from the base of
Nickleplate park
Just down the road from our unit the ski hill. Benny got a job with a renovations company and I got a Job at a Yummy Italian restaurant called Gabriellas at the base of the hill. We both loved the people we worked for and I got to snowboard everyday and just work at night!! The mountain was awesome, uncrowded, steep, cliffs, and on powder days the place was unbelievable.
We took the van on a road trip and checked out different mountains like Whitehorse, Fernie, Kicking horse, Revelstoke, and Nelson. Sleeping in the van in the middle of winter in canada was an experience but probably something I wouldn’t do again. (Ben disagrees) A nice hot shower is a must after a big day boarding..... The van just didnt cut it.... It was a good trip through and we got to see some amazing snow capped mountains and board some good powder especially in Kicking horse where Em’s friend Matt showed us around. Kicking horse has some really sweet steep shutes which we hiked too. We also got powder in Revelstoke which had just opened up this year and is going too be bigger than whistler in the 10 year plan…
We became friends
with a family in town and I helped look after their twin babies. I totally loved looking after them and Ben basically had to drag me away when it was time too leave. After the ski season they took us both mountain biking which we totally loved and next thing I know Ben and I were buying mountain bikes. These things arnt cheap, and Ben and I got the cheapest we could at about $900 a piece!! The good bikes are anything from $2500 to $5000!! As we found out Mountain biking became the skiing of the summer, it was what everyone did after work, on weekends and all everyone talked about at BBQ’s. At the moment it isn’t getting dark till about 9pm at night so there is plenty of time for riding. The downhill mountain biking on the mountains around town was crazy, people go down things I would never have believed if I hadn’t seen it. Its just as fun as snowboarding but I feel there is a much higher chance of dying!! It was fun to learn a new sport and now we have a bike rack on our van and the bikes are coming with
Shops in town
The best thrift store around. It opens twice a week, on wednesday and friday mornings - everyone queues out the front for the best bargains. You have to be careful though as the old ladys will push and shove there way to the front!! us.
Our plan now is to drive up to Alaska via the Alaskan hwy. Ben has fitted a bed in the back of the van, we have bought a car fridge which works great, we have a little camping stove/bbq, chairs, two fishing rods and a guitar (which we cant play). We have been on the road now for just two days. Stopped in some nice towns called slocan and nakusp. Both towns are right besides massive lakes. We spent some time biking around and fishing. The water was so clear you could actually see the fish at the bottom. Ben caught us a nice Rainbow trout which we quickly cooked up on the barbie for lunch…
1 Week later..... Well unfortunatly the van is giving us some problems. It started making bad noises the day we started the trip north, right after moving out of our apartment getting rid of anything we didn’t need for the van trip and saying goodbye to all our friends in town It has really chosen a bad time to start playing up. So now we are back in rossland and looking for a new set of wheels to continue
our trip to Alaska.
Hope you are all well, Ems and benny
