August 14, 2013 Today, what we lacked in good weather, we made up for in wildlife. A tiny spitting of rain, a little bit overcast although still the sun kept breaking through, we went back into Sooke and explored the marine boardwalk that stretches from Ed Macgregor Park to the foot of Murray Road. Here we were entertained by a rather cute little seal who performed underwater acrobatics in the clear waters before surfacing on his back and lazily drifting off into deeper water, still floating on his back. A few more curious little fellows kept popping their grey little heads (with their big puppy dog eyes) out of the ocean around Iron Mine Bay in East Sooke Regional Park when, later that afternoon, we walked the half hour trail down from Pike Road car park. ... read more

August 13, 2013 – Sooke Potholes Provincial Park In the morning Matthew and I spend a long time down on our little beach. The sun is out and the day is heating up nicely. The clear water around the rocks is teeming with beautiful purple, red and green starfish. We watch them move around in super slow motion, their tiny white tube feet propelling them over rocks, through the gentle lapping water. We very gently stroke their backs, curious to see what they feel like. They are rougher than we expected. Yesterday we gingerly transported a beached starfish back to the ocean and watched him come to life as he found a comfortable spot in the rocks and swirling water. I’m sure he would have been just fine left alone but it felt right somehow! We ... read more

August 12, 2013 – East Sooke Provincial Park Monday morning and while Sam concentrates on a spot of Geography and Matthew and I work on decimals, Steve busies himself with a combination of work and listening to the cricket. By late morning we find out that England has indeed won the ashes in the fourth test. Steve is happy. After a quick lunch we head out, staying in East Sooke but driving around to Ayland Farm where we park up in another car park monitored again by a lovely lady from Park Watch. Warm and friendly, she immediately provides us with a quick run down on the area. We can head “over there” for the beach and then follow the coast trail around. She provides an estimated time to walk a couple of alternative trails and ... read more

We are in training to hike the Juan de Fuca trail and expect to start our trip on April 12,2013. It is about 47 KM and we will be hiking from south to north. The hike should take about 4 days and the plan is to be back home on Salt Spring on the 16th or so. The home date is quite important since I have to leave for a Habitat leaders conference in Toronto on the 18th. Both of us have been doing lots of hill climbing with weight as our packs will have to contain the tent plus sleeping bags, mattresses, food, scotch, extra clothes etc. I expect to carry about 45 pounds and Jan is aiming for 25 pounds. This trail is not as long as the West Coast trail which we did in the ... read more

I have been travelling around canada for 3 weeks now, with a big wetsuit and booties in my bag, so yeah I wanted to check the surf. I heard stories about people surfing Sombrio while bears run around the beach, so though I should defineatly give it a try. I started in Victoria again, no need to hitch hike, just taking a 2.50 bus over to Sooke. I thought it would be an easy short ride, it looked so close on the map. Didn't know that it was a commuter town, took the express bus and still it took me two hours til I made it, bloody traffic jams. I had no idea where to jump out so waited until the bus driver dropped me off. I had an address in my book where I could ... read more
