Adam's Blog:
Hi folks - back on line again after a week on the high seas to Alaska....the internet rates were pretty exorbitant $1.50 a minute.....so waited till we got back to LA....Anyway time to update our travels....going back to week 11 with some lovely photos to scan through:
When we checked out of Jasper we took quite an adventurous journey to Bridge Lake which was 4 hours away, firstly spotting a black bear on the side of the road - 'blink and you'll miss it' then some elk..look out! Leaving the Rockies left us feeling we had seen some amazing scenery and wildlife.....we soon arrived at Bridge Lake as per my last entry - a fishing and camping haven.....now you can think here nice thoughts like camping in the woods, the pristine freshwater lakes, aahhh the serenity.....or you can think - unpleasant ones like any thriller movie set in the wilderness, Deliverance, Friday 13th, Lake Placid.....it is weird.....the solitude is refreshing but it is alarmingly too quiet knowing there are things out there - such as the coyote sounds at night. Anyway we enjoyed the 4 days more than anything relaxing at the Log Cabin, and the kayaking
on the lake was a great experience.
We left for Whistler stopping off at a nearby roadside diner for breakky.....thinking it would take 10 mins....30 mins later....the toasted sandwiches were ready....non plussed our GPS Reggie showed we could take a shortcut around a lake and over a hill cutting out an hour off the trip...we soon found oursleves up a forest track at a 15 deg slope and literally a goat track. Alison's fingers were digging into my leg as we were on the edge of the mountain - no guardrail some way up.....when she said can you move over away from the edge I said I'm in the path of anything coming around the corner.....thankfully nothing came our way and when we got to the top the vista was superb.....Our escape passed the test (we can say this now as not sure if it was part of the rental agreement) and we soon arrived at Whistler.
Whistler was amazingly clean and picture postcard....having just done the olympics it was showing off its glory as spring was coming on. The Village area was a treat and we had a great spot at the Delta Suites - right in
the middle. It was surreal going into an English pub - Elephant & Castle watching the NBA Final in a Canadian Town, for dinner. We had just 2 days there - doing the touristy thing....the mountain was changing over to mountain biking with most of the snow having gone by now.
Our final Canadian destination was back where it all started in Vancouver and at the Hyatt. It was a familiar feeling having been here twice before and a time of reflection over the past 2 and a bit months...we headed back to 'The Keg' restaurant for our last dinner and had the same waitress, enjoying a nice meal. We dropped the Escape off and yippee no penalty...the car did us well on our 4000km adventure, considering the kids were in the back it was a surprise.
We left Vancouver early the next day as we decided to take the train to Seattle.....it was a 3hr pleasant ride along the Puget Sound and although a bit grey and gloomy showed some interesting marine sites as we crossed into th US of A. We arrived just in time for our Norwegian Pearl cruise to take us to Alaska.
