Today we explored Ephesus, the old ruined Roman town. We did a full day tour which included 2 hours at Ephesus with a guide, a visit to what is believed to be the house of the Virgin Mary and a trip to see the remains of the Temple of Artemis, one of the 7 ancient wonders of the world. Sadly there is only one pillar still standing today. We finished the day at a carpet factory and were shown how traditional Turkish carpets are hand made. The carpet is built up by a row of knots, each tied by hand by the weaver. Many carpets are made of wool but you can have a silk carpet, which is very fine and so it takes a lot of knots to complete a single row. Some silk carpets can take 9 months to complete! There was an opportunity to buy a carpet at the end which we did! We opted for wool (budget wouldn't stretch to silk).
