Did all the touristy things we didn't do when we first came, because we had our first visiting guest. Drove all over Qatar and even went dune bashing. Loads of fun! These pictures are of Doha itself, including the newly opened Museum of Islamic Art. It's wonderful architecture.... read more

I have never blogged...but going to give this a try. A somewhat last minute decision was made to visit my in-laws, who moved to Doha, Qatar last summer. They plan on living in Qatar for approximately 3 years. We wanted to make the trip once, as we would never have an opportunity like this to see another part of the world that is so different from home. We decided tonight that we should keep a blog of our trip. It's so very different, and I doubt we will experience something like this again. I remember my mom giving me a book to write a journal in when we went to Scotland in 2004. We talked about that tonight over coffee...and this blog was born. We left on Wednesday, March 23rd. Our flight to London was delayed ... read more

I never knew how bad my singing of the national anthem was until I stood up in the stands of Qatar for the final of the football Asian Cup. As the only Australian in a 40 seat vertical and 100 seat horizontal radius I had to make my voice heard. Something, which I did each day in my 2 day stay in the country. Flydubia is a new budget airline so I was able to find cheap flights from Sudan and at $20 for a finals seat I thought why not! I may have missed out on Australia winning the World Cup so this would be a nice consolation. It started off in a rage. The airport didn’t really look like a major tournament was being staged, which was a bit disappointing. The taxis are forced ... read more

I decided to combine Oman and Qatar into one blog since we were in both countries for less than a week combined. We were lucky to be couchsurfing again in these countries as there are no hostels at all, camping would be insane, and the cheaper hotels start at more than 100 dollars a day. True they are all luxury but on the best of days I would not want to spend such money on a hotel. So, Oman. Like Dubai I really liked Oman. So a bit of history that I thought was interesting. It was fasinating to see how much in common Oman has to Zanzibar. When we were in Zanzibar we learned that Zanzibar used to be part of Oman, but really didnt think too much about it at the time. In Oman ... read more

Most people by now have heard of the news phenomenon that is Al-Jazeera. In the US, many still view it with deep suspicion (due to a misguided perception that it is, somehow, anti-American), but generally it has developed a reputation as one of the better international news programs in the world. Fewer know that it is based in Doha, Qatar and even fewer know what its name means. In Arabic, “al-jazeera” translates as the “the island” or, more aptly in this case, “the peninsula”. Qatar is a spit of a peninsula jutting off the enormous peninsula of Arabia. You get the picture. Although I was only in Qatar for a short weekend, and in no real position to make any sweeping analytical assertions about Qatari society, I was struck by the differences I noticed between it ... read more

Mia har dessutom lart sig massa om geografi, t.ex. att Qatar ar ett land och inte bara ett flygbolag. Jag kan erkanna att jag inte visste mycket mer... Massa kramar fran Emil och Mia ... read more
