Since I don't have my mountains to escape into I've had to find a substitute - and that would be the beach.
I must admit - I do fancy the beach - the picture of the sand bordering the great sea - the various colours of the sky as the sun runs it course. I love how on some days the sea will be raging with a loud voice and on other days just slightly breathing as if it was resting. I find it amazing how it comes alive at nighttime - with all the creatures that lurk around.
I've never knew what beach culture was until this year - Its been enjoyable just watching how families, friends and others experience the beach - its a whole new type of life style I've never witnessed before. Its pleasant I must say - especially when you see a family having a picnic right before sun set - eating, chatting, laughing and watching eagerly for the moment when the sun vanishes behind the horizon. Only if Colorado's shallow ocean was still around from the Mesozoic Era.
I would suggest anyone that comes for a visit or even to study abroad: Rent
a bicycle or buy one - there is decent bike path that runs up the coast from Yaffo up to the North. I'm not sure really how far south or north it goes - but none-the-less, there are plenty of places to adventure with a bike.
(Tips on buying a bike: For sure talk the price down - but when it comes to second-hand bikes - most likely you're better off buying a new one - most second-hand bikes are stolen as well pieced together from multiple different bikes - you'll end up having to do repairs on it - and that adds up).
Alright, enough about the beach -
So about a week ago I decided to check out a nature gathering up in the northern district of Israel. These nature gatherings (electronic festivals) are usually found in the north or south. The one common thing about these nature gatherings is that you don't usually figure out where its at until about 1am. The gathering usually starts around 3am or so.
So the eve of the gathering my roommate and I headed to Tel Aviv to meet up with our ride. Since we didn't have
anything to do until 1am - we sat at a burger bar ate some grub and than just walked around experiencing Tel Aviv nightlife. By the time all was said and down we headed toward the north around 3am . . . Israelis have a crazy "gathering" schedule, that's all I'm saying . . .
As we were heading north we came upon a road check-point in the middle of nowhere - we had to get out of the car as the policemen searched the vehicle. After being searched and having our bags looked through we sent us on our way. That was an interesting experience - we survived that whole ordeal and continued north.
(Tip for dealing with Israeli police: Just be American - don't try to speak Hebrew or even so much give them the clue that you can comprehend what they are saying- and don't let them rush you. If you are driving and they ask you where you are coming from - try to avoid saying "Tel Aviv" - they will for sure search your car).
We arrived at the location about 5am and found ourself stuck in traffic on some mountain
Nature Gathering
Dancing at six in the morning!
Crazy . . . crazy Israelis . . . road. My roommate and I couldn't believe that everyone showed up this early in the morning for an electronic festival. Usually this is when you go home after a festival not when you arrive for one.
So finally we found parking and hiked up to the spot and couldn't believe the number of people we saw. There was at least a few hundred Israelis stomping around to trance music . . . it was interesting - very interesting.
Dance culture is another thing that I have enjoyed observing on my travels - Here in Israel when it comes to electronic music my roommate and I call there dance style the "Israeli stomp" Everyone does it - its a funny site but a fun one when you join in and become apart of it.
We stayed until about 11am and then we had to leave - We couldn't handle another 5 hours of the same music in that type of heat, ha.
Alright, until next time.
