Quick update: The new semester at Tel Aviv university started this week so now I am back to the grind of things. The break has been an interesting I must say. The university had an overflow of students arrive for the spring semester so they relocated a few of us to off-campus housing. Moving is never an enjoyable minus a few situations here or there, and I must say moving to the center of Tel Aviv has turned out to be a blessing. I couldn't imagine spending another six months in the dorms. The new place is located off of Dizengoff and about a 7 minute walk from the beach . Compared to the dorms the new apartment has a nice home feeling to it. The best part is that now I have two patios, one ... read more

Shalom and hello to all my friends and family. Here is a little update on my status and what has been going on this last month. I found myself down south at a moshav called Zohar (זֹהַר) which means Brightness. Zohar is located about 5km from the Gaza border. I've been south before, but never experienced life in a moshav. For those who are not familiar with a moshav it is type of Israeli town or settlement based around agricultural. Moshav were designed as a state-building function and is similar to that of a Kibbutz but differs in the terms that the farms are individually owned and the profits that are derived from the goods goes to that individual owner and is not communally distributed. (This is a brief description – if you want further explanation/history ... read more

I was on my way to the Sinai peninsula with a few friends from Hebrew University and as we approached Eilat to our surprise realized that some of us forgot our visas . . . tisk tisk. Being that it was late Friday afternoon we all found ourselves stuck with a dilemma with what to do. There was no way any of us were going to take the bus back to Jerusalem so we all decided to make a weekend out of Eilat. For those who are not familiar with Eilat, its Israel's most southern city that is located in the Negev. Eilat is a typical port city filled with tourism and it especially comes alive during the summertime. I try to avoid unnecessary crowds so going during the winter months was my ideal time. For ... read more

Blogging isn't my strength - sorry to keep you all waiting. So a few months ago as in October I believe, I woke up and found myself in Prague . . . crazy, I know. I received this phone call telling me there was one more spot left on this organized trip for college students and after hearing the cost of it, I would've of been stupid to say "no". There was about 35 other people I traveled with, mostly consisting of a mix of students from Beer Sheva, Tel Aviv and Jerusalem. There was a jam-packed schedule for the 3-day weekend, so I was eager to do as much exploring as possible. Usually I'm not one for organized trips and I especially hate the feeling of being controlled in a situation that rushes you through ... read more

Back at the Blog! I hope all is well to those who have been following adventures here in the East. School finally started! I must say it was wonderful having a long break. The semester here is only 3 months long and my last day of classes falls on Dec 31st! Its a bit crazy thinking that so much time has already gone by. I feel like I've done so little out here, yet at the same moment I know that I have experienced a whole new world. So I decided to take 6 classes this semester - and so far all is going well. I'm not liking 8 o'clock mornings though, especially since Hebrew is my first class. Not sure how they figure someone will be at their peak so early in the morning, but ... read more

The Beach - Nature Gathering

Since I don't have my mountains to escape into I've had to find a substitute - and that would be the beach. I must admit - I do fancy the beach - the picture of the sand bordering the great sea - the various colours of the sky as the sun runs it course. I love how on some days the sea will be raging with a loud voice and on other days just slightly breathing as if it was resting. I find it amazing how it comes alive at nighttime - with all the creatures that lurk around. I've never knew what beach culture was until this year - Its been enjoyable just watching how families, friends and others experience the beach - its a whole new type of life style I've never witnessed before. ... read more

שלום Shalom! I decided I better update this thing or what's the point of having it. Finally the high holidays are over - and now I am down to the last week of freedom before classes begin on the 11th. Experiencing the holidays here has been one amazing experience. Most of the holidays I spent with friend's families and what not, but for Yom Kippur I decided to travel to Tzfat with my good buddy Tzvi Darling. Now Tzfat was the one town that I fell in love with the first time I came to Israel almost three years ago. If I ever spoke highly of a town - Tzfat was uttered from my lips. Finally I had the chance to return, but not just for a visit, but to experience Yom Kippur. Tzfat is one ... read more

Shalom (שלום) So yesterday was the last day in Ulpan. (So glad its over!) In case some of you have forgotten Ulpan is an extensive language course that has been running for the last 6 weeks. I have no clue what happened to the month of August but wow . . . it just went by so fast. It still feels like summer here - so its hard to think of that fall-time is approaching. So after my final in Ulpan my roommate Dan (fellow Buff) and I decided to celebrate with an afternoon at the beach. I love the beach that's right by campus here in Ramat Aviv. It by far is my favorite beach out of the 4 overs I have visited. There was no one there and the waves were perfect. Once I ... read more

So its been awhile since I've had a chance to give you all an update. So far the heat has not resided and seems to continually grow stronger. I was speaking to an Israeli student who was studying for her entrance exams and the topic of the extreme heat came up and she told me: "When you feel a breeze, you must to hold onto for as long as you can." That's the truth! Its crazy to think that school has already started without me in Boulder. I'm excited to see what happens back home but honestly I can't wait to start studying over here. I do miss the little perks at home, like $2 breakfast burritos and great tasting pizza! I still do not have a clue what my schedule will look like here when ... read more

So this last weekend I headed to the north to experience some of great outdoors. Since I've been here at the university studying at the ulpan here, I've had the amazing opportunity to meet fellow students like myself from all over the world. So on this adventure I teamed up with two ladies from Germany (Anne & Aleine) one from Sweden (Corrin) and another from France (Sara). I liked the odds I must say. The ladies decided to rent a car and we all took off Thursday afternoon. They asked if I would drive and I happily said "yes". As we left the dorms trying to head toward the highway somehow within the second block I got us all lost . . . ha, it was a great way to start the road trip. Oh my ... read more
