Volunteering in South India

looking for places where i dont have to pay an arm and a leg to offer my free time

Does anyone know of any places in South India, preferably rural, where I can spend a few weeks volunteering and working with the locals?
The only projects I've come across cost about a grand for 2 weeks which seems absurd to me, knowing how low the standard of living is in this part of the world. I'm specially interested in working in a rural setting in the southern part. Reply to this

Hi Ann~
If you will be in Mysore there is a program called Operation Shanti run by a woman from San Francisco who lives there 10 months out of the year. You can go to the website at www.operation-shanti.org or read the blog to learn more at http://operationshanti.blogspot.com/
here is my blog as I brought shoes to them while I was there in January. It was VERY fulfilling work, I must say!
