I always seem to be writing my blog when it's raining. Not that it rains ALL the time - just about 90% of it. Whenever the sun comes out I dash around like a mad thing getting my clothes on my clothesline, which remains the only one on the entire campus. Granted, since there's so much rain I sort of understand why no one else has one. Saturday was rather miraculous in that we had six full hours of sun during the CAVRA hike, which was stunningly beautiful, and a lot more fun than I thought it would be. I've got my hiking boots conspicuously sitting in front of my closet door now so that everyone can see how wonderfully rugged and dirty they are now. Saturday was also my roommate's birthday (the English one), so ... read more

I've been easing into my official school schedule for the past week now, which has gone by much faster than I thought it would. This is possibly because I finally have free time in my academic schedule for the first time in my life! I've got two completely free blocks (the first of which I'm relishing right now) and two more free hours in the afternoon if I haven't got CAVRA or an activity. Before I discovered morning free blocks, I had no idea that 50 minutes is the perfect amount of time to leisurely brew and truly enjoy a steraming cup of coffee...I've just emerged from my math class, which is quickly becoming one of my favorites if only because the teacher always picks these outrageously politically incorrect examples to illustrate problems ("Let's find the ... read more

I've never had a first day of school like this; for starters, it's quite obvious that no one plans out their outfits for hours the night before. Well all right, one person does - my friend Ollie put a lot of time into choosing his cornea-searing ensemble of bright yellow skinny jeans and purple sneakers. But as far as I can tell, he was the only one. After years of "classroom" discussions in which I was one of two people who actually spoke, it's such a relief to go to classes where everyone is interested and enthusastic about the subject. My English teacher, a 23-year-old ex-AC student whose two nose piercings reflect the energy-saving fluorescent lights, made us analyze a poem for an hour that sounded like something you'd put on a Post-It note, a grocery ... read more

Classes start tomorrow and basically everyone is just waiting for classes to start tomorrow. In classic Wales fashion, it is cloudy and damp with a thick fog cover, which doesn't really do much for anyone's mood. The ILBs (Inshore Life Boat servuce participants) are undeniably the worst off, though, as they have to wake up at 6:30 every morning for the next month in order to go do their fitness and swimming training in the bone-shatteringly cold Welsh Channel. This is why I joined CAVRA (Cardiff and Vale Rescue Association); it's the only rescue/exploration service that doesn't involve jumping daily into a body of water so cold that the survival time is less than two hours. Besides, if I can hike half a mile through the stinging-nettle infested woods back from the watchtower without a flashlight ... read more

Tonight is the second sosh, therefore it is also the annual first-year roast put on by the second years; more importantly, the theme is 'self-made superheroes' and we're all encouraged to go in our own self-made superhero outfits. So, I'm actually USING all the duct tape I brought and poking holes for my head and arms in a trash bag, with duct-tape covered shoes and a lovely duct tape belt. My lovely pillbox hat fashioned out of old newspapers will perfectly complement my newspaper necklace and duct tape earrings, and my name - why not?- will be White Trash Girl. Actually the duct tape is coming in quite handy. I'm now the only student in the entire campus with a functioning clothesline attached to a tree outside my window, thanks to the duct tape that holds ... read more

Here at Atlantic College, the first-year induction period consists of six days of endless orientations followed by a four-night, showerless camping trip in northern Wales, where we are encouraged to bond with our fellow first-years through lots of very dangerous, very fun water-oriented activities. This is why my hands feel like two slabs of raw meat attached to each wrist; yesterday, I was climbing along barnacly crags with the Welsh surf (yes, there really IS welsh surf), pounding against the legs of my wetsuit in our coasteering course. At the same camp, I also learned how to surf, and I mean really learned how to surf; I actually rode a wave three times, and the instructor said I was the most natural surfer he'd ever seen! At school in Middlebury, I was always considered either the ... read more

Today may have been the most emotional day of my life. College has ended and I have had to say goodbye to 149 of the most amazing people I will ever meet. To say I feel upset would be a gross understatement. The main issue with leaving Atlantic College is that it is an international school, and not just that, a VERY international school. When some of your best friends are going back home to countries you hadn't even heard of before meeting them two years ago, it becomes quite questionable as to whether you will ever see or here from them again. On the one hand these next nine months will mean that I have no opportunity to meet up with my fellow graduates, and it will limit my ability to keep in touch (no ... read more
