Dear All Greetings from Sheffield! I have returned after a really wonderful month travelling around Scotland, England’s northern neighbour. Whilst recent travel restrictions have not been easy to deal with for a travelling soul like myself, I would like to thank Scotland for offering me the opportunity to get out there, explore, and scratch that travelling itch I’ve been unable to scratch for quite some time now. It has shown me its glorious nature, stunning landscapes, wonderful wildlife and welcoming people, and I feel now I have gotten to know Scotland just that little bit better than I had done before. Before I ended my journey, however, I had one final port-of-call to make, and that was to wonderful Glasgow. While I still think Inverness is my favourite Scottish city, I just loved Glasgow as soon ... read more

The locals claim that May is the driest month in Scotland. Well August/September must be when the Sottish monsoons arrive as our 4 days on the West Coast and the Isle of Skye were quite wet. When in Gairloch, we managed to hike up Beinn Eighe (pronunced Ben A) which was a good work out. At an elevation of appx 750 meters, we started to show our age!! Beautiful scenery at the top and lots of fresh water streams rolling down the mountains. Gairloch, for a small town, has a very interesting museum that provided a great deal of information of past life in the community. We also had a nice dinner at Badachro Inn which looks over a remote harbour about 1/2 hour drive outside of town. Off to the Isle of Skye for a ... read more

Another great day. A leisure breakfast and a visit to Provand Lordship near the Cathedral. It is the oldest house in Glasgow 1471. Some interesting history and a beautiful “Inn” in its day. Mary, Queen of Scott’s would have enjoyed her stay. A Great City and glad we visited. ?... read more

What a great lazy day. Up late. Shopped around for a place to have dinner. Went to the Cathedral, Cathedral Museum, Drygate Brewing Co and Walked and Walked. A good day. The one thing that impressed me about Glasgow is that the museums are free. I think this allows you to donate when you think this is good or awesome and if not.... see you later... For the most part they do a great job adding value to what you see in their museums as there is additional information that makes you think or appreciate what you see. In most places around the world you need to buy a brochure and loose time and interest. I really like what they have done. We thought the Cathedral and Museum were well worth our time today. Thanks. What a beautiful sunrise from the plane. Neither of us slept well but we managed to stay awake the whole day. The attendants were very good at Air Canada but the meal was just so so. The plane was a hour and half late taking off but that just meant we arrived at 8 rather than 6:30am. So we dropped our bags at the Jurys Inn and proceed to Starbucks for our morning latte. Got a new SIM card from Scotland so TELUS doesn’t get a chance to make unreasonable charges to my account. Found out some of my money was recalled so had to find a bank to exchange them. After some sight seeing on foot we did the hop on hop off bus to get a fuller lay of the City. We stopped at ... read more

I had been thinking of an A to Z of Glasgow for some time and was keen to have a go before the holidays. Also, I thought it would be nice to have a bit company. It had been ages since I’d seen Audrey Macintosh We had met in Stornoway and then did the Cape Wrath Running Week during the mid noughties. Since then, I had continued to race locally and coached for a few years whilst Audrey had completed some mind blowing events by attempting a Global Odyssey to run 100 Km and a marathon on each continent whilst fund raising for Alzheimer’s Research. In contrast I had ran up and down a hill I can see from the windows of the house. We met at the Armadillo on Sunday – Audrey had agreed to ... read more

Today dawned a little wet; as we hit the bus, there was a very light drizzle. As we departed Liverpool to head toward the lake district, the skies opened up. Our coach driver was fortunate in a way; he had to deal with wet weather but no traffic. Oh well… we settled in for the two hour trip to the lakes. Our first stop was a bit unique: a ride on a steam locomotive. Due to the light traffic, we arrived quite early, in plenty of time to enjoy a scone and coffee. Here we learned firsthand about the great scone controversy. It seems the cities of Devon and Cornwall differ on how one should eat a scone with clotted cream and jam. Devon puts the cream on first and the jam covering the cream. Cornwall ... read more
