A view of Lakeside on WindermereA view of Lakeside on WindermereA view of Lakeside on Windermere

Taken from Fell Foot Park
Gday Everyone

Well today we started out from the New Holly Inn in Lancaster (we thoroughly recommend this hotel if you are anywhere near there)

We decided to drive through the Lake District and then on through the Yorkshire Dales.

The first stop we had was at The Aquarium of The Lakes at Lakeside on Windermere where they have some very different fish there including Piranha. We saw some shark eggs that had babies writhing around in them (shark babies), otters tturtles and so on, a great way to spend an hour or so.

We then drove on through Near Sawrey and a mile or so down the road was Far Sawrey we didnt actually see Sawrey...don't know even if there is a Sawrey (Jules stayed at the Sawrey Hotel when she was over here with her Dad so we had a look at that too.

We then drove to Bowness on Windermere to catch the car ferry to the other side of the lake. For those of you have travelled on the car ferry at Corinna which is $20 for a 40 yard journey or so this crossing cost 3 pounds or about $6.60 for a 3 mile journey....

After getting off we drove through the rest of the Lakes District to Hawes in the Yorkshire Dales where they make Wensleydale cheese and roll the cheese down the hill once a year.

From Hawes we journeyed to Ripon where we are staying for the night.

Ripon is a very old town that got its first charter from King Alfred the Great in 886. The Charter wasnt written but they were given a horn on the proviso that it was blown at the four corners of the Market Square every night at 9.00pm to let the people know that the Wakeman had set the watch....They have never missed a single night since. In 1604 King James decided that the wakeman had too much power so it was then given to the elected mayor to control in a new charter. The current Ripon City Hornblower is a bloke by the name of George Pickles, a very personable bloke who stayed around and chatted with us before he went to blow his horn again in front of the mayor wherever he might be at the time. Now thats tradition isnt it.

Tomorrow we are

Again not many photos today but we had fun anyway.

Love to All
