Day 20 Liverpool - Southport 24 miles (615)
A fairly gentle day out with Pete (brother) taking the train from Stockport and returning from Southport on the train. Arriving in Liverpool we followed the signs north past the docks . At one point we became aware of a large number of people converging on a seemingly derelict warehouse at the end of a blind alley. It appeared to be a Sunday flea pit market. Leaving Liverpool we were soon at the rather bleak expanse of Formby sands fighting against the blowing sand on the coastal path. A few individuals were braving the elements to walk on the beach, but some were there for a bit longer! Anthony Gormley's installation "Another Place" . with the view out to sea of wind farms and the distant North Wales coast the figures were highly effective.
On for a pub lunch and then we called in at Ainsdale National Nature Reserve. The strong wind limited what we saw ( we didnt see red squirrels or natterjack toads) but there were some good plants in the dunes and a suprising carpet of Lily of the Valley in the Pine woods.
A few
more miles of battling the wind and we were into Southport where we caught the train back to Stockport
