This morning I woke up and... stayed in bed an extra few hours. I had a ticket to parliament and was planning on seeing Buckingham Palace, but honestly I could not get out of bed. My left shoulder is very visibly higher than my right shoulder due to the HUGE knot there. I think one of the things I'm learning on this journey of self discovery is to appreciate imperfection. Normally I get anxiety if I go to a place and can't see every corner of it. For example: when I go to Lagoon I have to walk every corner of it or else I feel like I am missing out. Imagine the extent of my anxiety when not able to see every corner of a country. Or a city! I have been to London and didn't even see Buckingham Palace! Instead, I curled my hair, put on a heating pad patch and took a short stroll to the Post Office. I had to ship some things home to save a few extra pounds on my back. Pricey, but worth it.
The tubes were insanely busy today. It took me an extra hour to get just a few stations over
for my train to Dover. I find myself looking forward to long train rides because it means that I can sit and breath. The train ride to Dover was the best ride yet. I LOVED the countryside! I wish I could explain how green everything is. There is a perfect frosting of moss over everything. And I saw a huge rainbow! It was at least three times the size of rainbows at home.
I keep getting really strange looks as I am wandering around. Have people never seen a backpacker before? And when I say that I'm from Utah?-- People look at me like I might as well have said I was from the lost city of Atlantis. We need some serious Utah PR up in here.
I got off at the cute, quaint little train station here in Dover and walked around the city. The town square might as well be from a movie. I AM TOTALLY MOVING HERE. The Dover Castle wasn't too far from the station but up a crazy steep hill so I found a taxi. He haggled me forever-trying to get me to agree to a drive around the city. The fare price
was going up by the minute so I had to get a a bit short with him and tell him that he was just delaying to get more money. Agh!
I made it to the castle and, consistent with a lot of the trip so far, some of it was closed. The underground tunnels and underground hospital sounded really cool, I wish those would have been open still! The hill that the castle sits on overlooks the pier and the breathtaking ocean views. Seagulls are squaking right outside of my window--I can see the ocean from my room at the guesthouse. Jess, you would love this little room I am staying in! It's so vintage and cute! (BTW I just watched VD's--holy crap!!) The best part? I have my own room! A big bed all to myself, a shower, a TV, no fighting over electrical outlets, and a fluffy white robe.. and I'm dunking my sweet oat crumble biscuits into warm hot chocolate as we speak.
I think I will head back into town for some dinner and then crawl into my big warm bed.
Tomorrow I will see the White Cliffs and a little more of
town before I head to Edinburgh.
