Ryan, Dean and Brian at the footy
I can't believe we went to the Oval in our first week here!!!! Hi Everyone,
It's been a week or two since we've given you an update of any substance, so today I'm going to try to catch you up on what we've been up to.
Geelong Vs Port Adelaide
Well, what else would you do when your'e in London but go to a game of Aussie Rules footy at the Oval. Dean was offered three tickets but Lauran was keen to head out for some shopping so we took a kiwi mate of Dean's along, Ryan. As you could imagine we had to explain a few basic rules to him before the game!!!! That sorted we settled into our seats to enjoy what turned out to be a very average display of the game. The players it seemed were over here on holidays, I can't blame them either, I'm sure the last thing they would want to be doing is playing a game of footy that means nothing while in London after a long disapointing season.
That asside the crowd didn't seem to mind at all and were just happy enough to be sitting amoung another 5000 aussies who understand the game they love so much. The second half is
when the real entertainment started. First of all with a mexican wave or two and then peaked when, as you would expect out came a streaker. With pace to match any of the players on the field(as they were going at half pace) and evasive skills good enough to avoid the cops and keep him on his feet for at least 30 seconds. Until of course he was ridden into the ground to a rousing cheer from the crowd.
The great thing about the day is that our tickets were for the members, so as I'm used to we had the best seats in the ground and didn't have to wait too long for a drink at the bar. Although I only had about two pints to the other boy's four on the account of a big Friday night. Overall it was an enjoyable day and fun was had by all, even Lauran who came back from the shops with a bag full of goodies.
House Hunting
As well as shopping while we were at the footy, Lauran was continuing our search for a place to live and set up two more appointments to look at flats for
the following day, the first at 8.30am. So it was an early morning stroll to Shephards Bush just to be dissapointed by a flat which didn't quite live up to the add. The second proved to be the winner and as you may have read in an earlier blog we are moving in later today.
Job Hunting
So after finding our new home the search was on for a job without the distraction of looking at flats. Lauran hit the agencies and registered with about four of them, by Wednesday she had a temp job which was meant to be for about eight days but by Thursday was offered a four month contract by another agency which she snapped up promptly.
The pressure was obviously now on me well and trully to get a job so I went East and South on the Wednesday and by Thursday had an interview. The interview went well but it was in Regent st(a bit too far) and the store manager was all about the bussiness and had no prior experience in optics so I could see a few clashes there. By the end of the day I received a call from
another store in Kensington High St(only a 10 minute bus trip away) and I set up an interview for Saturday morning. After two long days Job hunting I thought I needed a break and took a day to see some more sights, which I will talk about later.
The interview on Saturday morning also went well and the store seemed like a good environment to work in, with everyone looking fairly relaxed. By the afternoon the owner of the store had called me and offered me the job, which I greatfully accepted. It will be nice to be able to have some money coming in as all we've seen so far is the money going out, times two and a half if you choose to convert it!!!!
Sight seeing while Lauran worked!!!
Knowing I had nothing really planned for the day I decided that I would head out and see some sights at a slightly slower pace than on the top of a bus. Westminster was the chosen destination as I wanted to get a closer look at the "Big Ben" clock tower. Walking out of Westminster tube station the clocktower was right in front of me and
although it wasn't the first time I had seen it, it was still a great sight, as seeing it makes the fact that I'm in London just that little bit more real!! I tried to get the best possie for my snaps and started to take a few photo's when I realised that it was only about half an hour before midday, so I stayed close by to hear the westminster chimes and then Big Ben ring in twelve bells. After twelve I crossed the road to have a look at Westminster Abbey, and in the words of Joey from the T.V. show Friends it's the best Abbey I've ever seen!!!!!
Not wanting to pay the £10 entry fee (25 AUD)I walked around the outside to take a few pics, happy with what I had taken I thought
I would take a look around the Westminster Abbey Shop. It didn't take me long to realise that this was also the shop you enter after going through Westminster Abbey. Sooo once the guard had his back turned and was busy talking to someone by the gates I strolled across to the back doors and found my way inside. At this stage
I was pretty happy with myself so I took in as much as I could over the next couple of hours. So without having a guide or one of those little audio piece's I found my way around inside. Although it's a church and a religious place, I still found it quite a special place to be, surounded by so much history.
It was amazing to see the tombs of people that I've only really heard about through movie's, from King's and Queen's to many other tributes to historically significant individuals.
My day finished up by taking a walk through the Natural History Museum, which is right next to where Lauran will be working for the next four months. During that afternoon she had to go and meet her new boss before starting on the next Monday, so I went there and met her. The meseum is a huge place and I don't think that we got to see everything but it doesn't really matter as entry is free, and that's for everyone not just me!!!!
Apart from all that we have been a bit boring just preparing for our new place and are looking forward to settling down
into working and saving up for a few trips. Hopefully we will get to go on a couple of short trips before Christmas when we go to Bulgaria for a white Christmas.
Don't forget to wish Lauran a Happy Birthday for 1/11.
Bye for now,
Brian and Lauran.XXXXXX
