So our hotel room included breakfast this morning, or we could order off the menu. The breakfast menu as fresh fruit, bread, yogurt, meats and cheeses, croissants, muffins, coffee and tea. It was all excellent
Immediately following breakfast we went out walking along the beach and edge of town. Aside from the wind, you couldn’t ask for more perfect weather. This is an interesting seaside town. I imagine it is overrun with visitors in the summer.
One section of the beach has pebbles, then you find the sand. If you walk far enough you find stones instead of sand or pebbles. Along all the beaches are little houses that you rent for cabanas. Some people had theirs open and were setting up chairs, or having their morning coffee or tea. We were truly surprised to see one couple swimming! It was windy and 45 degrees when we started out!
We walked in the opposite direction and went in to the Lyme Regis Museum. It was a super nice museum with local history, and a history of Mary Anning ( female fossilist). It also had some info about Jane Austin and Beatrix Potter who both wrote books while visiting
here. We also helped them out by buying items in their gift shop! One was f the workers was really taken with Chrissy and the fact she knew so much about Mary Anning. She said most people who visit have never even heard of Mary!
We were able to walk along the beach and get pictures of the Mary Anning statue. While we were there, emergency vehicles came by trying to rescue a fossil hunter who didn’t read the rules of fossil hunting. First rule is don’t fossil hunt when the tide is coming in…..you get distracted, lose track of time, and you get stuck out where you can’t get back in.
The rain may have stopped here for periods of time, but the wind just never gives up. This is some of the worst wind I’ve ever been in. I took a video of me trying to walk back to our room. It’s posted on Facebook.
Because of the weather we had to cancel our fossil hunt. The end just never quits. Wind gust have been up to 60 MPH.
The rain has turned to sleet a few times. Chrissy has had a ch a bad
cold on this trip and is just feeling better. She didn’t want to take a turn for the worse. This part of the trip was all about her so she made the call to cancel. Maybe we’ll get back here!
When the sun came out the next time, we walked up the hill toward the church where Mary Anning and her brother are buried. Within the church of Lyme Regis, there is a painted window with this inscription:
"This window is sacred to the memory of Mary Anning of this parish, who died in the month of March 1847 and is erected by the vicar of Lyme and some of the Members of the Geological Society of London in commemoration of her usefulness in furthering the science of geology, as also of her benevolence of heart and integrity of life."
The window exhibits visiting the sick, clothing the naked, feeding the hungry, comforting the prisoners, while the sixth and last medallion illustrates the welcoming of the Blessed to their heavenly home. Mary died of breast cancer when she was 47 years old.
We left the church and walked some back streets of town. Many of the streets are
very narrow and difficult for 2 cars to pass. One car has to wait in order for o navigate the narrow streets.
We found some different shops, a brewery, the town mill, a pottery, and a couple more eateries. We also found the dinosaur museum, but it was about to close. Then we felt drops of rain and practically ran back to our room. It’s been raining ever since. We have been entertained by the swimmers and surfers outside our window. It’s so cold and windy we wonder how anyone is out in the water!!
Tonight’s dinner will be downstairs at the pub. Their food is awesome!! Tomorrow morning we take the train back to London, pick up our bags at the Balmoral House, and begin the journey home. So we have to pack, repack, rearrange, and hope our bags aren’t overweight!!!
