Well we are in Devon, but not near enough to any town of any size to register on Travel Blog. And that’s fine by me. We are in Scoriton and that’s near Holne.
We are the only guests in the pub and as Julie is still in the shower I’m the only patron in the bar. Told Kevin (when you are the only person here you’re on first name terms with the barman) that as the only patrons he will be able to spoil as rotten and that it will be good for me to be treated that way as I’m here to audition for the role of king. Was funny until I saw his condolence book that the pub has started! Not sure he’ll let me put a note in now! I’ll do my best to recharm him or I’ll just let Julie do all the talking. We are here for 2 nights so both options may be difficult for me.
But the moors are delightful. Easy walk and my fears of navigational difficulties were unfounded. I walked with guidebook and map all day but although there were very few 2 Moors Way signs the track was usually
obvious and evident. Almost half today’s distance was on a disused rail line, so really a blind man could have followed it. Once upon a time it was a narrow gauge line so it had more gradient and more curvature than I expected but it was pretty easy to walk. The line ferried men to work at the clay mines which isn’t so strange but the mined product, clay, was suspended in water and gravity feed to the towns before being exported all over the place. Very clever as they had an almost limitless supply of water having dug such a monster hole. The spoil from the hole created what looks like a volcano in one of the photos. QI.
Again the wild ponies are around but they no longer mess with me! I’ve got the cows bluffed and they are no concern but now the moors have had pigs introduced and I’m not sure about them. The only ones we saw we fenced and quite cute and I’ll admit I had second thoughts about bacon and pork belly for about 30 seconds. I’m well over it now.
Very short day tomorrow then picked up by Kevin (my barman buddy)
and driven back. We are returned the next day and it’s Widecombe in the Moor Fair Day. The biggest day of the year on their calendar and one of the most prestigious events on the Dartmoor Calendar. I’m trying to talk Julie into going for ‘Miss Showgirl’ but she’s stopped at 1 cider so it may be tough! Already Kevin is complaining about the traffic jams he expects on Tuesday. The locals never obey the one way signs and he maintains that on Show Day they should be made to.
Well Julie is showered and present so I’ll engage in some witty repartee, do some homework and have another beer.
Caio.
