From Widecombe in the Moor (really back home in Scoriton) but walked to Widecombe in the Moor today. The translation is ‘wide stand of trees on the Moor’, does it get any better? The village is described as a honeypot village, that is it draws tourists from all around and with their big show on tomorrow that is particularly so today. It’s quaint, old and lovely. It has the highest steeple on Dartmoor (very religious) but it was struck by lightning (very un-religous), scientists say as the result of an earthquake and ball lightning (very scientific), the locals said it was the devil (very pragmatic but probably wrong). Widecombe in the Moor‘s pub and the town itself and the primary school have as their symbol 7 similarly dressed men on a horse. We have seen the same symbol frequently here in Devon and will endeavour to find out the story but will happily accept any versions you care to come up with. Alla S whatever you say I’ll believe.
Today’s walk was along the beautiful Dart River and along the Dart River Valley before striking uphill along Dr Blackhill’s Drive and past a couple of special tors, through Ponsworthy and
Jordan and down South Combe Hill to Widecombe in the Moor. We also went through Bottoms Cross! Delightful walk, although being introduced to the moors yesterday, I wanted more. But more moors will come. Strange the guide book was full of praise for the light relief the landscape brings today when compared to the bleakness of yesterday’s walk. The Dart is quite lovely, one of those tannin stained rivers that dances over rocks and talks as it flows downstream. Often it is flanked by forest that is that lovely verdant green that only England can produce.
Couple of other walkers on the trail but significantly fewer than yesterday (Sunday). The numbers at Widecombe in the Moor made up for it though. Several places to buy ice-creams, drinks and pasties is indicative of crowds. Our host, remember Kevin the barman, picked us up and gave us the scenic tour back home. So it’s shower and cider time before we again tackle the menu. It’s burger night here at the pub but… surprisingly I think I’ve only had 2 or 3 burgers since I arrived. I’ve yet to have an ale pie! I have had a rabbit in cider pie though.
I think there will a pork in cider pie so that may be a winner. Last night Julie had a chicken burger that was good and I had the chicken curry which was also pretty good.
I‘m waiting for Julie to shower and have a cup of tea so she can send some photos that I can then use. Hers are better quality megapixel wise so apparently it’s the thing to do. Don’t worry my selfies can not be replaced! But no she’s still not here so what I took is what you get.
See you soon.
Caio for now.
