lunch
where we stopped for lunch. not a bad view Today's activity was going to be a little more traditional but a lot more strenuous. A group of us that included myself, Cody (San Fran) and Jake and Joe (the OC) were going to rent bikes and trek up to some of the mountains down in this nearby valley. Got up pretty early to get a head start on the day and rented bikes from this nearby pizzeria. Everybody in this town has some connections to the action/adventure sports. It took us about an hour and a half of mostly uphill biking to reach the town of Lauterbrunner which sits at the end of one valley and from there we took another half an hour to bike down through the valley to another small town on the end.
I know this is getting redundant but the scenery was spectacular and I took full advantage taking tons of pics today. To one side you had this cliff shooting pretty much straight up for about 500 feet and on the opposite side you had this fairly low lying mountain dotted with trees and cottages. Then you had the valley floor which is amazingly flat for the area with small farms and biking/hiking

biking through a swiss village on our tour paths. Oh and you can't forget that every half mile or so there is a waterfall spilling over the cliff that ran to our right on our trip out there. At the end of the valley we took a gondola ride (with our bikes) up to the town of Gimmelwald and had a little picnic. I am planning on uploading the picture of us eating up there since we had some gorgeous views from our spot. In one direction you could look down the entire valley from which we came and to the other side we could see some of the more famous peaks like the Eiger and Schilthorn. The next phase was to bike up to Murren, a town that is so close you could almost consider it part of Gimmelwald but since there is such elevation change between the two towns it takes quite a bit of time to get up there, especially on a bike. Was probably the most difficult bike ride of my life and it covered no more than half a mile.
From there though it was clear sailing down. The bike path from Murren takes you along the same valley we came

one of many in on except that this time we were riding along the top of our cliff which was originally off on our right side. Quite an easy and quick ride down and very welcome as we were all pretty beat and a little sun burned as well. I think I chose the worst bike possible from the lot for this ride though since my tires had no tred left on them which made braking on the gravel roads on the way down pretty damn hard. My hands were getting tired from braking all the time while I don't think I pedaled the bike for about 30 straight minutes. Took the same path back home from Lauterbrunnen to Interlaken we came in on and were pretty anxious to sit back at the hostel and just relax after a pretty long day. Ended up spending the evening/night pretty much the same way as the night before as I was exhausted for the second day in a row. Just relaxed with everyone and had a few beers out at the beer gardens watching the World Cup before retiring to bed.
