On a 40k drive westwards we went along an impressive coastal road, crossed the border into Basque Spain and then through a large built up area to reach San Sebastian, the leading resort city in the area. There is a municipal camper stop in the suburbs which was crowded but we managed to secure one of the few remaining places.

In the afternoon we walked along the promenade by the magnificent crescent of sand which forms the city’s main beach, Playa de La Concha to the attractive old town, Casco Viejo. Caso Viejo is in fact not that old having been burnt down by British troops in 1813 and then rebuilt on a grid pattern of narrow streets.

A climb up the local hill, Monte Urgull, brought us to the fort and statue at its summit. We finished an enjoyable day with a supper of pintxos, the delicious Basque version of tapas which are piled high on the counters of all the local bars.
