Sailboats
Our first view of the Mediterranean. I know my dad would love this view!!! Well, I'm not in Barcelona anymore, but I was there a few hours ago! I had quite the weekend. We left on the midnight bus to Barcelona and arrived around 7am after some taxi and bus changes. It felt like a 5 minute bus ride to me because I feel right asleep. People are starting to notice that I fall asleep very quickly here. I guess now I know that I've got that Cetnor gene too! We checked our bags in the hotel and went out to explore. First on our list was to find some water. About 2 hours later, we found it at a pier with a ton of sailboats. It was a beautiful sight. By then it was 9am, and we were starving so we decided to get us some good old McDonald's! About an hour after that, we found it and it was CLOSED until 11am!!!! What kind of McDonald's is that!? We were very upset. But went to some other restaurant and got a Spanish breakfast. Which I'm kinda a bit sick of. I could go for some nice pancakes right about now.
We found the actual beach and hung out for a bit. It
Barcelona Architecture
Just a house in Barcelona with beautiful architecture. was a really nice beach, but the sand wasn't real sand, it was more dirty then nice and beautiful. When we left, we all felt pretty disgusting. We went back to the hotel around 2 to check into our room. Our hotel was beautiful! It was a very nice pick, but kind of expensive. It was 147 Euros split between 3 people a night. Expensive, but worth it to crash and relax there. We ran to next door to our hotel to the grocery store so we wouldn't have to go eat lunch and dinner more than we had to and it was worth it. It only cost 7 euro to hold us over with snacks. We then changed into our bathing suits to do some tanning on the Mediterranean! We stayed at the beach for a few hours then around 7, we went back home. It was a beautiful beach but dirty. And all of Barcelona is topless beaches. You boys missed out. After the beach, we went to La Rambla, the "famous" street of Barcelona with a lot of tourist shops and street performers. By 9ish, we were back at the hotel and called it a night.
Beach
The beautiful Mediterranean! Saturday morning, we got up by 9 and ate our wonderful breakfast our hotel served. It was SO good! We had a full agenda for the day and were on a schedule. First, we wanted to go to the Cathedral of Barcelona. My Spain book made it seem much prettier on the inside than La Sagrada Familia, so we tried going there, but got kicked out since we were wearing tank tops and shorts. Bummer. It seemed so nice! Next we went to the Picasso Museum. He used to live in Barcelona so some of his inspiration was there (the rest from when he lived in Paris). It was very informative and I'm glad I went, although the girls I was with didn't seem too thrilled by it. It was no Louvre, but it was defiantly worth going. After that, the girls wanted to see La Sagrada Familia. We walked about 40 minutes there, literally saw it, and got a taxi back to our hotel. It was a huge waste of time, and it was under construction so we really didn't see that much. I guess it's nice that I have a few pictures of it, but it was pretty
Street performer
On La Rambla, there are a ton of these performers that just stand there, or make poses. If you want to take a picture with them, they expect you to give them a euro or so. over rated.
Went back to the hotel for lunch of bread and jelly (peanut butter is practically non-existent here. Somehow my host family has it, but we students can't find it anywhere), got changed and went to the beach. Before we went to the beach, I really wanted to go to the Parc Guell. Whenever you see pictures of the architectural side of Barcelona, you probably see tiled mosaics. The tiled mosaics are from this Parc Guell made by Gaudi. So I faught to go, and the girls came and ended up loving it. It was beautiful! I am so happy that I got to go!!! We went to the beach for the rest of the night and around 10, went out to get real dinner. Since we were on the beach, we went to a seafood restaurant right on the beach. It was amazing and cheap. I got seafood pasta for only 8 euros that was one of the best dishes I've ever had.
Sunday morning, we made it to the bus station around 11ish and caught our bus for noon. We sat on that bus all the way to Madrid until 8pm. 8 hours!!! We switched
Girls at the pier
Nicole, Vita, me, and Whitney on the pier. buses to go from Madrid to Segovia and got home around 10:15ish. It was a LONG weekend, but very worth going. I had a lot of fun in Barcelona. It was nice to just vacation and sit on the beach. I'm glad we got to see some sights too.
Overall - great weekend! This week, I have classes today (Monday) through Friday (rather than Friday off), and an excursion to Salamanca and Avila on Saturday. It will be along week, but on Saturday, I'll be exactly half way done with my trip! I have mixed emotions on it. I really, really miss Michigan. Even more so that all of you guys went to Jeffrey and Naomi's party Saturday and I wasn't there. 😞 I was bummed. But if I was given the choice right now to come home, I think I'd stay my whole term length because it really is beautiful here and I'm really into the swing of things. I think everyday about all the things I miss about Michigan (McDonald's Dollar menu, a double cheeseburger is about 4 euro here! Target, Coldstone, my bed...etc.). But, I love this town I'm in and I fall more in love
La Sagrada Familia
La Sagrada Familia. It was a bit over-rated, but still very pretty from the outside. with it each time I return from a big trip. I really miss that I didn't do anything for 4th of July! I mean...I was swimming in the Mediterranean and was hanging around Barcelona, but I want a good old bbq with hot dogs and pop and chips. Aah. It's nice just to pretend.
Hope the weather is nice in Michigan! I miss you all!
