Barcelona:Nov 25-26, 2010
This trip was not a great one from the start. First of all we made the mistake of flying with Ryan Air for the first and last time. Ryan air is the worst airline on the planet. So the flight times made it so we were there from Friday until Sunday. However it was really Friday at noon then a two hour bus into Barcelona because the Barcelona airport was in a nearby small town. So we got there a little after 2. Then on Sunday the flight left at 1030 which mean we had to take the 8 am bus from Barcelona. So really we had half of Friday and all of Saturday so we made the most of it. 4 of us decided to go- Pat, Jen, Priscilla and I. I have no idea why but we let Priscilla do the research for the train from Salzburg to Memmingon where the flight left from. Of course because its Ryanair it was called “Munich West” airport even though memmingon is an hour and a half outside of Munich, and Munich is two hours outside of Salzburg. Well because Jen and Priscilla aren’t super smart
they decided that the even though the flight was at noon it was impossible to get there on time without leaving the night before. That is not true, but we didn’t know that until later. So we left on the last train at 1130. We went to get a kebab and beer nearby until 1 when they closed. Then we found a nearby bar and had a beer but around 3 we were so tired. Jen of course wanted to go to the casino above the train station. Pat and I went to the warming room in the train station to sleep for 2.5 hours until our next train. So at 5:30 am our train left. Sadly we couldn’t sleep because after 35 minutes it made a stop and we had to get off and wait in the snow for 15 minutes for the next one. The next train was about an hour long, and then we had to take a taxi to the airport. We slept at the airport for another about 3 hours until security opened and we could get through. We grabbed a bite to eat at a place that actually had bagels!! And then we
Holla' dogs!
I'm sure he was in important city/religious leader but it looked kind of like he was saying holla' yo! chatted for an hour or so until our plane boarded. The plane ride was I think around an hour and a half but then we had to take the 2 hour bus. And then finally we were in Barcelona!!!!!! We were starving but we got there during siesta so only a few places were open. We went into the first open one we saw and despite their extensive menu the only had one kind of salad and steak. So we ate their and then split up with Jen and Priscilla since we were at different hostels and our plan was to see Barcelona and since it was Jen we knew their plan was to be hammered the whole time. We got to the hostel and they had over booked son instead of two separate rooms with queens (we had treated our selves to a room without a roommate for thanksgiving weekend and big comfy queens…also the hostel had a great deal on singles) we got 2 twins in a 10 bed co-ed room. Luckily there was only one other person so it wasn’t so bad. We were so incredibly tired and it was siesta (there NOTHING is open) so we
decided to join the rest of the country and take a nap. It’s so refreshing and when we woke up around 5 everything was open again so we went to explore. We walked down Las Ramblas and then down to the waterfront. Around this time it was 7 or 8 so we started the search for dinner. We found this incredible place where we got seafood paella and a great red wine. Afterwards we went to a nearby bar and had a drink or two before turning in for the night.
The next morning we were up so early for our only full day. We had coffee and muffins downstairs in our hostel and made our way to the sagrada familia. The metro system in Barcelona is so complicated. Sometimes we couldn’t figure out how to get from one direction of the same line to the other without leaving and repaying to come back in or even which line/direction we were at. But we made our way there and took lots of pictures. Outside there was a man selling hand painted wooden fans so I bought a few because they were just so pretty. We walked around
Sagrada Familia
The most famous work of Gaudí..sadly unfinished because he was hit by a bus during construction and never wrote down the plans. Barcelona some more and just to see the city and around 12:30 we stopped for lunch. As usual I ordered for the both of us since I knew what was actually paté of eyeballs and brains and what was a delicious specialty of the region. We had croquetas and the Spanish jambon and a few other things and Sangria which is always good. After lunch we went to the Gaudí Park. We spent most of the afternoon there. It was huge and the whole thing was designed by him down to the every bench we sat on. After the park we went downtown and made our way to the Olympic Stadium. Nearby was the magic fountain which only lights up once its dark but since it was the end of November it was already dark so we enjoyed that and the lights on the Palacio Nacionale de Montjuic. After that we went to dinner at a place that had a dinner menu that was only tapas. In Spain tapas are sort of like appetizers but they are very common because small tapas come with your drink and they are always very good. But this restaurant had 15 kinds
of tapas and they were good portions as a meal so we split it and all of them were so good. The Patatas Bravas were the best I’ve ever had anywhere. And we ordered sangria and it came in a 1 liter stein! We got two each and afterwards went to bed because we had to pack and be at the bus station at 10 to 8. We got there just in time and got to the airport with time to get subway (the only food there). However because it was Ryanair and they suck they made me check my bag because my purse wouldn’t fit inside. But we got back to Salzburg and still had Monday off. Over I really enjoyed my time in Barcelona and I think I would go back because I felt like there was so much more to see!
