It was around 7:15 when we left the albergue in Burgos. I pulled a Raresh when departed, leaving my walking sticks leaning against the railing of the cafe across from the albergue and not realizing it until the young lady with us mentioned it. I left my backpack with Raresh while I hurried back to get them. The young couple continued on ahead and we didn't catch for quite a ways.
It took quite a while to actually get out of Burgos. We took a short break at a picnic area/playground at a major intersection outside the city. About 10 long kilometers later we entered Tardajos and stopped at the first bar in town for breakfast. A sign said they had fresh gazpacho, and since I needed to get some good food in me to help fight my head cold, I ordered a bowl to go with my coffee. A couple kilometers later we entered Rabe de las Calzadas. It was about that time, so we stopped for a bathroom break before the last 7 or 8 kilometer stretch to our destination of Hornillos del Camino. Good thing we did, because that part of trail was almost all uphill
and barren of even trees most the way.
Even though today was only a 20 kilometers or so walk, it seemed a lot further, probably due mostly to my having to clear my nose a hundred times. I know, that's an exaggeration, but it sure seemed like that much. I still have a runny nose, but I don't feel all that bad. We checked into the Albergue Meeting Point and I went for a stroll around the small town to see what was available. There is only one small store with a very limited selection of food for lunch or dinner, but they a thoughtful assortment of pilgrim needs. I bought a couple packs of tissue, and a bar if soap and plastic container to replace the one I left at the Albergue in Burgos.
The young couple didn't want to stay in our albergue and ended up in the somewhat sparse municipal albergue. Raresh and I ate lunch at another albergue's bar. I tried a cheeseburger and Patatas Bravas. The cheeseburger was tender and delicious, while the Patatas Bravas where frozen, overcooked French fries that were a bit tough. After lunch, I returned to the albergue to
take a shower and try to take a nap. The shower was the "you have to push the button every 10 seconds" type, but the water was quite warm. The nap didn't work well. Since there are few options for dinner, Raresh and I are going to one of the other albergues for their pilgrims dinner. Ours offers a dinner, but it's the same price and has no options, just mixed salad and paella.
We ended up eating dinner at the Bar Casa Manolo, with an American Raresh had met. He may join our motley crew tomorrow. For 9.90 euros, I had macaroni with chorizo and tomato sauce, breaded hake with sour cream, and flan for dessert. It was all very good, except for the chorizo, which was a bit tough. After dinner we took a stroll, chatted with the young couple, then returned to the albergue.
Tomorrow we are planning on walking to Castrojeriz, another 20 kilometer day.
