Hello again, We drove from Almeria to Calnegre and opted not to stay in a dusty field for €6 and wild camped on the beach. We spent the €6 next morning having breakfast in a local bar. The little village was quiet and we sat having a drink, a few feet away from the sea. The owners of the bar were taking down the sunshade closest to the beach and we thought it signalled stormy weather. No was the response “ we don’t have a licence for this and the council come to inspect tomorrow, then we will put it back!! “ Thursday we drove back to Casas Nuevas to find the house enclosed in security fencing and the garden walls demolished and all of the foundation work done for the pillars for the second floor. ... read more

Seemed to take ages to get packed up and leave today and it was 11am before I paid the campsite bill and we set off heading for the mountains. We knew that Clarissa Tomtom was going to have a day off today as the GPS is very poor in the mountains and indeed we managed to miss our way in the first 2 towns we came to. Not Clarissa’s fault but our Spanish road atlas is 90% useless and will be heading for the rubbish bin when we get to Santander. Cangas de Onis was the second town we mislaid our road and looked a delightful place to stop for a visit but, like so many pretty and busy places with parked cars right down both sides of the road, not for us in a motorhome. ... read more

This morning I woke up at 9am - when breakfast starts. Realising I was late, I grabbed a fleece and jeans to toss on over my pjs, and ran down to breakfast. It was only cereal and a cup of tea, so it was ok that I was a little late. Around 10.30, we set off for the Picos de Europa - I see them as the Cairngorms of northern Spain... Unfortunately, to get there requires going all the way to the coast and back, when as the bird flies its actually quite close. Our first stop was at Santa Iglesia de Santa Maria, which is the oldest church in the region. The architecture was an interesting mix of Christian and Moor, and there was a lovely story about a couple. A Spanish noble fell in ... read more

September 17th weekend My host family told me that i we were going away for the weekend with there closest family friends who i had met previously at a birthday party. The family also had an au pair from the states named Becca who is 26 with a degree in Spanish. So Carlos and Natlia thought it would be nice to go away for the weekend to the village of Potes and stay at a goregous hotel that they occupy yearly. It wasn't until we met the other family of Dmas, Suzanna, Dmas jr., Kendala and nanny Becca that Becca and I realized that this weekend was in big part for us to see this beautiful area of Cantabria. With no real agenda but to relax and see the local sights the weekend was very relaxing ... read more
