It has now been a week in this beautiful city, and still holding strong!
We have had multiple surf sessions in Zurriola (which is only 3 -4 blocks from our apartment in Gros), We have spent evenings walking Parte Vieja stepping into some of the best bars for Pinxtos (tapas), walked the city endlessly and yesterday we took a day trip to Bilbao by bus, boat and surrealist art.
Today a hike to spend the morning at the Urugual castle with the Jesus Christ Statue taking in the beautiful and loving city beneath.
Yesterday, We left at 9am and headed directly to Guernica, not a huge city but steeped in the history of the country and more specifically a symbol of the Basque community. There in Guernica we stood in a city that Franco and the German air force leveled during the Spanish civil war. It was here at Geurnika that through years of tradition the head of each small basque town would meet under the shade of a tree and discuss the problems of their cities and how they could go about fixing them, one of the first earliest forms of democracy and action. Now the spawn
yeah waves
Reflection of wave scoping. of the grandfather tree grows next to La casa de Juntas where the assemblies meet and continue the Basque tradition, with the grandfather stump of the tree still standing nearby. Then it was off to Gexto where we boarded a boat that would take us into the city of Bilbao, once the most important port for industry it has seen its revival through the building of the Guggenheim museum. We deboarded the boat in time for a great lunch and then onto see some of the art in the Guggenheim, then back to San Sebastian.
Today we decided to spend a cloudy day walking to the old castle Urugual where a statue of Jesus Christ overlooks the city of San Sebastian and our beaches. We took the more scenic way down and then enjoyed a wonderful lunch of bocadillos before returning to our apartment for Siesta (one of Seth and my favorite parts of Spain) and snacks then a mellow night of making spaghetti at home while Seth finishes homework. I love this town.
