4 September 2011 1100 (Seville, Spain, 2058 NZ) Today is the day we ditch the friends and head off on our own… well the 3 of us visitors that is and a few semi locals from spain tell us that we are bound to get robbed in Barcelona, all part of the experience right? Wonder how long I can think that if im the one to get robbed! Haha So the last few days have been awesome – we arrived in Seville on Thursday avo after a Ryan Air delay (apparently this is fairly common) & our Seville hosts, Debbie & Paul, were at the airport to meet us! Hooray! They bought us back to their place, they live in a hotel which does a great deal through their work (Airbus Military) so we are in ... read more

Chiclana/Costa de la Luz Sorry this is not the most coherent entry I’ve ever written. My brain is a wee bit fried and I can’t remember everything. • “No pasa nada” is kind of the whole mentality here. People don’t seem to be bothered by a whole lot and generally seem to lead a far more relaxed lifestyle. Sorry I can’t share as many photos with you on my blog as a result of this. There was a lot of toptional going on. I need to inspect my photos first. ;) • Katie and I watched a wedding going on from a distance and learned a few new dance moves…he he. • The resort was a lot different than mainstream Spanish life…people actually went to bed. We started off at 9am with our jamon y queso ... read more

I'm way too tired to be writing this blog but alas, I couldn't possibly go to bed without doing so first. I have pictures. And thoughts. #1: Often, there are no seats on the toilet, no toilet paper and you're lucky if you find soap. #2: After seeing how many unleashed dogs are on the streets, I don't think I can ever lean up against a tree in a park...or really anything for that matter. #3: After dinner I said that I needed to change out of my watermelons and go put my flip flops on. #4: We found the long way around to the mushrooms today (aka Plaza de la Incarnacion). #5: Not enough stairs this week. Let's do 270000 more... This morning we only had 2/3 classes because we left early to go to ... read more

I wish time wasn’t passing so quickly! I feel like just when we’re finally starting to get to know the city, the things to do and finding more places to explore… This morning was a tonto day en escuela; ‘nuff said. PM clase was short because of Sevillanas, but we had an interesting discussion regarding the Catholic Church and its significance in Spain. Just because you don’t go to Church, it doesn’t mean you’re not a Catholic and just because you go to Church doesn’t mean you are one. While Spain is still predominantly Catholic, I think it may be more culturally so than religiously so. The people here can apparently still opt to have their taxes put towards the Catholic Church. Violation of Church vs. State? What do YOU think? Sevillanas was a lot of ... read more

Sometimes I think about how much I’ve learned in the 2.5 weeks I’ve been here…and other times I realize how much I do not know about the language. I am pretty certain, though, that the sign on the door of the servicio (bathroom) with a dress is for mujeres. Call me confused, but when I went to use it when we were out for tapas, there definitely was a hombre in it…with the door open…and I suddenly questioned whether men actually wore dresses, if my Spanish was so bad I couldn’t even read signs without words or if I suddenly became disoriented in a different universe. Then Nacho came out of the other one and I felt much better about myself and decided it really was not that important to visit the servicio at that particular ... read more

6/ 6 Dare I say I felt somewhat intelligent in class today? Not the whole time…but I didn’t feel totally tonto today. Pieces are coming together so I’m glad I spend a lot of time on my work when I need to. We have a sub this week (for how long we don’t know) and I can understand her a lot better than the regular profesora (who I do like…just don’t understand), but I don’t know the meaning of half the words she uses so I’m kinda back to square one. It’s fine though because she’s totally all about helping us and I talked to her—err..tried to talk to her—after class so I think she knows where I’m coming from. I really do have a lot going on up in my head but sometimes I can’t ... read more

Saturday We arrived in Granada somewhere around noon and checked into Hotel Carmen and the professors took us down to the ‘shopping center’ and I literally spent two hours in a bohemian/gypsy-like area, very Arabic in influence (so much so that I now have my name written in Arabic). I don’t think I’ve done much bartering before, but I found that to work on this street. I may have a new tapestry and more jewelry…I think I can open a joyeria when I come back (jewelry shop). The best part about it is that the jewelry isn’t expensive! I will probably have to wear all of my bracelets on the next flight if I don’t send them home. Hah. On our way around town, there was a parade of…not really sure what, but women and girls ... read more

Spanish was más facil this morning. I could understand what we were doing and I think I actually did the homework more or less correctly? She didn’t totally correct what I was doing so I hope so! We have an examen on Monday! I definitely like class much more when I comprehend what we are doing. Después de clase, we went for churros…except we didn’t end up eating churros…I had un huevo a la flamenco and Gabriel gave us some chicken with honey-mustard sauce to try that was AMAZING. The huevo (egg) was super too…they were the small eggs over some potatoes and other veggies (& squash). I definitely am going to eat that again. Definitely a confusing communication regarding when we need to be here for comida (food) and when we’re not here and when ... read more

Spanish kicked my butt. A day like last week. Really hard when I don’t understand many of the words and I don’t want to ask for definitions when it’s THAT many of them because then the class doesn’t get to do anything but that! I felt smarter in my evening class ;) (it’s in English). I actually really do enjoy learning about Spain’s history and discussing the sociological aspects—sociology has always piqued my interest. After class I went down to La Plaza España again, took more photos and then we walked down in Old Sevilla. I found 5 Euros in the park next to the plaza! Getting to know our way around better but still haven’t seen the shirt I saw during Gymkhana…I want it! When Costello took us around the shopping area and showed us ... read more

• Tried anchoas for la primera vez (anchovies). Safe to say I won’t need to try them again. • Pacos quadrados son muy divertidos (Pacos squared are very fun). Paco the professor and Paco loco, one of our guides from Spain, took a handful of us out for a night on the town that culminated in literally a hole in the wall location complete with Flamenco dancing. • Before a night on the town, everyone went to Alcázar, which is a palace where the kings stayed when they were in Sevilla. It is amazing and you would NEVER know what is behind that red door you may already have seen a picture of. Still can’t comprehend the size. First walking through the palace, it seemed like it went on forever. Then the gardens…we didn’t even see ... read more
