Opening cheer
We were hoping they would sing the national anthem, but the cheer was nice too. Hello all...
The past few days have been just CRAZY... bocci, parties, going to Piran again, sort of getting things set up for school...
It all started the day I got back from Italy. That day, me and my roommate Elise had a pretty relaxing little day walking around the city, finding a bike for her, and then walking around Tivoli Park. In the park, we came across a little sand court where a gathering of generally old(er) men had begun, and we saw two groups fully decked out in matching track suits with matching bags start to warm up for a rip-roaring game of...
BOCCI!! hahaha... it was awesome. Me and Elise sat and watched them warm up and then play a couple games too. They were REALLY intense! It was like better than watching curling! Anyway, one of the men talked to us and asked us where we were from, and told us too what the game was called in Slovene but I can't remember the name and its not in my dictionary...
When we finally tore ourselves away from the game, we were on our way home for dinner when we came across the
BEST scooter I have ever seen. We actually stopped in our tracks and took like 6 pictures of this thing... just look at the pictures and you'll understand! Straight out of the 80's!!!
Anyway, Elise cooked me a rad dinner (she's a GREAT cook... we agreed if she cooks I clean! haha), and then we went out to a party of Erasmus students who are all at the faculty of Economics. Of course, we couldn't show up to the party empty handed, so me and Elise went to buy a bottle of wine, but quickly learned that there is a law in Slovenia that prevents the selling of alcohol in stores after 9pm!! The gas station like 100 meters from my house has like 3 full walls of beer, wine, and spirits that you can buy all day, and I've even seen people crack them at like 10am IN FRONT of the gas station, but as soon as 9pm hits they cover it all up...
Anyway, so this is where it gets interesting. We met up with Nadia from Portugal, and on the way to the Economics party we came across another party being held at the Faculty. Well,
this party was sponsored by the University, and thus had many many bottles of very expensive wine that were unopened and going to be disposed of because the party was over. So, the little darlings Elise and Nadia got it in their heads that we should just, you know, take (steal) one of these bottles so we didn't have to show up at our party empty handed. So, I hid in the shadows while they went up to the table to have a bottle opened, with the barman presuming so they could have a glass, and then they turned and walked out the door with the whole bottle! SUCH class we have!! ahaha... oh well we got to drink REALLY good wine all night!
So, the next day we had orientation at school. Well, its wasn't so much orientation as Neli (our fairly disorganized coordinator) talking to a group of about 100 students for 2 minutes, handing us a booklet and a sheet with courses listed on it, and then answering questions for about 5 minutes that nobody could hear the answers to because everyone was talking so much. Not my idea of a good orientation to the faculty,
but i should have expected it with the way things have been so far with all the administrative and paperwork things I've had to deal with. Anyway, for those of you who have been curious, my courses start Wednesday. Well, one of them does. Then I have a week before the next one starts. Then another week before the other 3. Such a rediculous system for me but I guess if it works for them then it must be ok!
That night (last night), there was yet another Erasmus party that was for the Economics faculty people, and this one was at a bar near the center of the city... and let me tell you we PACKED that bar. You could barely breath, let alone move! It was a ton of fun though and again good because I got to meet people that I won't be studying with and so might not have otherwise met! We danced and drank and tried to talk above very loud music and got drawn on by all the markers that were being passed around for people to write on each other's shirts as a memory... until about 2am when it just got a
little to packed. Elise, Caroline and I (they are both from Quebec) went for Burek and then home... ps... Burek is only good after the bar! Its like a greasy pastry filled with cottage cheeze... so unhealthy but so good after a night of drinking!
Today, after staying up until 4am talking with Elise, she and I and Caroline went to Piran. Again, it was beautiful. I could live there forever if it wasn't for the snobby, rich attitude the locals seem to generally have. Well, maybe it was just the waiter where we decided to eat lunch. They actually "shooshed" us out of there when we were done so that this group of very wealthy looking italians who stared menacingly at us could have the table. I really couldn't believe it. Other than that it was a good day even though I had to leave early because the last bus left at 4:30. Elise and Caroline stayed the night which I'm a little jealous of because they got to watch the sunset over the mediterranean!! My time will come I'm sure...
Ok, love you all...
Mel.
