I don't really remember the day part of day expect Troy from New Zealand who works at the hostel asked if I wanted to go and have some Golash. It was just up the road from the hostel at this little hut, you have to knock on the window and the man opens it you tell him you want Golash. He does not really have anything else there expect frozen pizza that he puts in the microwave. It was very good and filling and got to know Troy, who was only working at the hostel for a few weeks while the owner (Jimbo) was away on holidays. For the evening we all went to the pizzaria and ate num num pizza and some beers, we came back to the hostel to chill and watch movies. ... read more

I woke up at the right time and caught my train to Zdiar, well I caught the train to Poprad then I would need to take the bus to Zdiar. I first had to take a train to Bratislava, my Eurail pass does not work in Slovakia so I was allowed to sit in first class until we got to the Slovakian boarder then I had to move to second which was very full so I just sat on the floor in between carts since it was only about half an hour. My connecting train to Bratislava was late thank goodness since my train was very late getting in and I was very happy that I did not have to wait another 2 hours to catch the next train. This train was very full as well ... read more

Our arrival to Slovakia and the pursuing midnight prowl through a towering, decaying sídliště to find the only cheap accommodation which existed in Košice, and the lack of sleep I got, is one of those things which is just best left at a quick description. Should any philosophy MA students wish to write a thesis titled "The emotional equivalent of carving through your midriff with a circular saw", then contact me and I will provide a detailed play by play description. Let me just say that I was extremely glad to have Jitka with me. I set off alone after having vaguely recovered from it all. Walking through Košice to the station in the morning, I felt myself able to find appreciation in the little things like the churches and fountains, that there was a band ... read more

Motorhome News from Eastern Europe 42 28th June - 8th July 2010 Slovakia. The High Tatra Mountains - and the hills are alive with the sound of music in Austria once again as we wend our way westwards towards home. Strbske Pleso, Tatranski Lomnica, Liptovsky Trnovec, Vlkolinec, Bojnice, Neusiedler See, Melk, Salzburg, The Rhine, Mosel and Bruges. It has been muggy and uncommonly overcast since we left the coast but the sun put his hat on for our trek above the ski resort of Strbske Pleso in the High Tatra Mountains. We picked our way over the uneven rocky track with the morning sun glistening on the limestone slabs beneath our feet, the call of a nutcracker in the mature pinewoods and a crystal-clear blue sky with views towards the stunning mountain peaks as we climbed ... read more

After some breakfast with coffee and mosquitoes, we get back on the bikes and drag our weary feet on down the Donau towards Bratislava. We stop for a first break in Hainburg/Donau, where we buy some supplies and meet some Australian bike tourists on the way to Belgrade. The road continues along the Donau to the former border - which is now nothing more than a few empty houses, leftovers from the past. Near Bratislava, the path crosses the Donau over a massive highway bridge and then gets lost in the city of Bratislava. After getting lost on a tiny path ending in someone's backyard, we manage to find a bikepath following the Donau back to Devin, where it apruptly merges with the main road. The path picks up a bit later again, and makes for ... read more

I hadn't heard many good things about Slovakia. Literally every person I know who went inter-railing said the same thing: avoid Bratislava at all costs. Then the Hungarians I met in Budapest argued it isn't even a country just a rebellious Hungarian province. On the other hand I'd heard the scenery in some areas was amazing so I figured I'd give the country a chance. Things did not get off to a good start. Trains are generally late in Eastern Europe but my train from Budapest was particularly bad and I had a connection to catch. I missed two trains to Poprad and ended up arriving at a train station somewhere in Eastern Slovakia. The word bleak does not even begin to cover it. I'll admit no train station at night is a pleasant place (except ... read more
