After some breakfast with coffee and mosquitoes, we get back on the bikes and drag our weary feet on down the Donau towards Bratislava. We stop for a first break in Hainburg/Donau, where we buy some supplies and meet some Australian bike tourists on the way to Belgrade.
The road continues along the Donau to the former border - which is now nothing more than a few empty houses, leftovers from the past. Near Bratislava, the path crosses the Donau over a massive highway bridge and then gets lost in the city of Bratislava. After getting lost on a tiny path ending in someone's backyard, we manage to find a bikepath following the Donau back to Devin, where it apruptly merges with the main road. The path picks up a bit later again, and makes for a lovely ride through some woodland further on to Devinska Nova Ves. Just before getting into Devinska Nova Ves, we're suprised by a thunderstorm. Out of nowhere, a little wooden shelter appears and allows us to stay dry, while the scenery around us disappears underwater. A roaring stream forms where the path used to be, and cars are turned into boats floating along what used
to be a road, but is now one of the major streams in the area.
About 30 minutes later, the thunderstorm has passed, and we can continue on the road to Devinska Nova Ves. Apparently, the people in this town decided not to put up any signs for travellers, and our only chance for finding the right road is to ask someone. The lady we happen upon doesn't speak any English, but does point us down a major road, leading into another even bigger road which then takes us on to Stupava.
On the busy Stupava main road, we find a Billa (making half of us feel at home) and stop for some lunch of bread, cheese, and car exhaust fumes. Since we didn't manage to get there yesterday, today's plan is to get all the way to Stará Turá, so we soon get going again and start on the road up northeast.
When we get to Kuchyna - not far up the road - it looks like another thunderstorm is about to get us when it starts raining again. We seek some shelter in front of a bar, and when nobody comes out to serve us, I go inside
to ask for the famous "penzion Otto" which is advertised everywhere, but can't be found anywhere. Nobody inside knows about it, but they just say "Pizzeria" - which is just next door. So...I head over to the Pizzeria, asking about accomodation. Next thing I know, I'm sitting in the owner's car for a long ride down the main road (30 Seconds), where she has a spare house with two bedrooms, a living room, kitchen, bathroom - all for 12€/person. I try to convince myself that this is for real, but she doesn't appear to be joking.
We take the room (I mean, house), get cleaned up, and head over to the Pizzeria for some dinner in the evening sun (yes, the thunderstorm passed). Back in the house, we watch some World Cup football (Holland-Uruguay in the semi-finals) and then drop into bed.
