Geo: 62.0764, 35.2217Kizhi is a small island in Lake Onega in North Russia, east of Finland. Its wooden buildings were mostly built in the 18th century, and a large-scale restoration project has been underway for many years. The winters are long up here. The popular saying is "summer is nine months of anticipation and three months of disappointment". Today is the first day of summer and It is quite light still at 10:30pm. We were woken by the dawn at 3:30am.We had another culture presentation this morning by Ludmilla, that I am now finding too much. I am more interested in her history and "life in Russia" lessons. In the avo we walked around Kizhi for a couple of hours in very cold weather with occasional bursts of sunshine. Dominoes and cocktails, then after dinner more culture, ... read more

Geo: 59.8685, 38.2509Goritsy is a small river village whose main feature is a 15th century convent. As is common in rural Russia, this is complemented by a monastery in the nearby town of Kirillov. The monastery was founded in 1397 and is one of the largest in Russia. These institutions (especially convents) were favourite places for the exiling of widowed or divorced nobles, where they often lived out their days in prison conditions. We visited the monastery in cold and slightly rainy weather. Ludmilla gave another great talk, on Russian arts this time. Our team won the Pick the Liar competition after dinner.... read more

R: We began the next day with a breakfast of breaded chicken, which made me ridiculously happy. We took a taxi over to Moscovskiy Vokzal (Moscow Station) for our trip to Moscow. Everything is extremely secure in Russia so to enter the train station we went through airport style security. Though this did at times seem to be a token effort. We wandered through the enormous dark looking station, which was largely filled with nothing, and perused the small selection of shops before heading to the "fancy bit" of the station where the smart Moscow bound trains pull in. To get to this we went through security again. The train itself was very smart - they have recently put in fast trains to Moscow the same as the German ICE trains, and the journey takes about ... read more

Geo: 57.636, 39.8928We had a long tour of Yaroslavl this morning. An industrial city of some 600,000 people. The Russian Federation has 13 cities with a population of more than 1M, in its total of 146M. Women outnumber men by a large margin: 78M to 68M. What was the USSR became 15 countries in 1991.... read more

Geo: 57.5247, 38.3328We embarked our ship on Sunday afternoon. The Volga Dream carries a maximum of 109 passengers (95 on this trip) on four decks. We have a nice suite on the top deck. It is comfortable and functional but not especially luxurious. The food is good and the staff pleasant and efficient. Wine and beer are included with lunch and dinner, which is fine. The first night and most of the next day were spent cruising. We had an interesting and passionate talk from Ludmilla, our history professor guest speaker. She disagrees with the majority view that Gorbachev was a bad leader and she also vehemently opposes the nostalgic view that Stalin may not have been so bad. She is not a fan of Putin but recognises that the most important values for the Russian people ... read more

R: The next day brought spaghetti and sticky pastries on the hotel breakfast. We decided to split up this day, Cate and myself going to look at a royal palace outside of town, while Clare and Richard took a boat trip on the river. Our trip started with a subway journey to Moscovskaya metro station. Most people have heard about the Moscow metro system but I can confirm that parts of the St. Petersburg metro are just as pretty, though maybe not on quite as grand a scale. St. Petersburg, and in specific, the station we got on at, had recently had a terrorist attack just before we visited. There was no sign of this, however the level of policing was fairly high. This turned out to be the norm in Russia, as I will comment ... read more

Geo: 55.7416, 37.6201We visited the State Tretyakhov Gallery where Russian paintings are displayed. Svetlana gave a very informed commentary on many of the works, wirelessly talking into our ear pieces. Then after lunch we rode the Moscow Metro, on and off for several stops to view the highly decorated stations. Luckily our group of 14 is very considerate and punctual, so it was smooth sailing. The Metro was built in 1935 and it carries nine million passengers a day, around its 200+ stations. The deepest line is 83m below ground. We never waited more than a few minutes for our next ride. It costs about $1.50 for a single entrance and you can ride and switch trains as often as you like. Over 65s travel for free. If you go out the turnstiles you'll need another ticket ... read more

Geo: 55.7497, 37.6135We started the day with an exclusive, pre-opening visit to the Kremlin museums, followed by viewing several of the churches and palaces in the 28 hectare, triangular-shaped complex. After another fine lunch at the National Hotel we spent most of the afternoon (too long) at the Museum of Cosmonautics. What a shame that no photos were allowed inside any of the Kremlin buildings. Our first stop at the so-called Armoury Chamber was truly awesome. The vast museum had only a small section of military regalia, but included an AMAZING collection of garments, crowns and royal accoutrements, religious items, ten Faberge Imperial Eggs, etc. Excepting maybe in the Vienna Museum of Fine Art, these were the most wonderful exhibits we have seen. For example, on display was a distinctive, richly decorated 13th century church robe in ... read more

R: So many months ago, I promised I would start blogging our experiences in Russia and on the trans-Siberian railway. It has been several months. If you are still interested, and I have kept you waiting.... I'm sorry. Anyway. I will recreate these memories from notes I took at the time. This trip was a bit different for us, we were travelling as a four. Clare and Richard (Cate's parents) were with us too, the idea being that Richard and I continued on the trans-Siberian, while Clare and Cate came home at the end of half term. Lots of people have asked if Cate was annoyed that we continued on the journey without her. The answer is, no, she did not want to spend 7 days couped up on a train with me or her Dad. ... read more

Geo: 55.7598, 37.6212What an eye-opener! Moscow is a magnificent European city; right up there with London, Paris and Rome. The streets and architecture around the city centre are imposing and impressive. The traffic alternates between free-flowing on 12-lane boulevards, to severely congested around choke points. The current Mayor is undertaking a program of widening footpaths and reducing parking to enhance the ambiance of the city and encourage more walking (and the many small electric Razor scooters that look sensible and fun). The population of the greater city is about 18 million. As Napoleon advanced in 1812 it is believed that Russians fired their city, causing it to be mostly rebuilt in the 19th century. So, no ancient marble and stone buildings that become impossible to keep clean.Today the 14 of us in our tour program did ... read more
