So got the bus from Suzdal back to Vladmir to wait for our train that we had booked to Novosibirsk. It was a bit confusing because you have a train number on your tickets and a departure board except the departure board had a different time to our tickets...we waited around till that time and it suddenly changed to the right time we had, so all was good. We headed to our platform to find there was ni access! There were people waiting on all different platforms as this one was closed off having some work done and there were all these makeshift platforms made out of wood in the middle of the tracks and we had no idea where we were supposed to wait, we tried to ask a few people but no one understood ... read more

Hei igjen!

(Day 49 on the road)Dead-tired after a few rough nights on trains and only two hours of sleep the night before I arrived in Tomsk, a charming university town in the middle of Siberia. I desperately needed a break from my exhausting overnight-hopping, so I decided to stay a while. This was by no means easy: The first four hotels I went to all across town were booked out, so I had to settle for a place well out of my price range. The alternative would have been to press on to Krasnoyarsk, but I really had no energy left for another day of exploring and another night on the train. As it turns out, it was the right decision. I shared a room with a very nice Russian guy working for a local oil company, ... read more

I arrived in Tomsk yesterday at 2:30pm, and my friend Artyom was waiting for me at the train station. It was very nice not to have to avoid the nagging taxi drivers (who charge an insane rate!) or to navigate my way around another strange city. I have been spoiled with the royal treatment since I got here. By the way, I met Art and his mother on the train from Beijing to Ulaanbaatar where we shared a compartment. They were very kind to me, and invited me to stay with them in Tomsk. Yesterday, Art drove me around to all the sights of the city. We had some lunch with his girlfriend Natasha and then saw more sights. In the evening we went to the sauna with Natasha and some friends of theirs. It was ... read more

Tomsk, Russia is a very inviting and friendly place in Russia! It has been said that it is the Oxford town of SIberia. I totally believe that. The town was a mix of old and new culture and people there were the most friendly and helpful people that we have encountered in Russia. We arrived in Tomsk, very late in the afternoon. We had taken a bus into town because the train we had wanted did not pan out the way that we would have liked so we bused instead. I had not slept very well the night prior to our excursion to Tomsk, so I was rather fatigued but ready to explore. We got into town and decided to eat something so we went to a pizza place that was next to the train and ... read more

After elaborate early morning birthday celebrations for Nico (doughnut with candle in Novosibirsk train station) we take the bus to Tomsk where we are spending a few days with Grigory (couchsurfing again) and his family. We entertain ourselves on the 4 hour journey by singing crap '80s songs and eating. Nico's incredible effect on the average Russian girl is again in evidence as while I am buying ice-creams at the half-way stop he is charming free mobile phone calls to Grigory from our fellow lady passengers. I return to find one poor girl giggling and literally swooning. Unbelievable. Nico, of course, is loving it and when we start moving he scours the guidebook for info on Russian residency. Brat! Short interlude for discussion on 70's kiddies tv show: During the journey I also make the discovery ... read more

Well folks, I've made it to Siberia. After 55 long hours, the train pulled into Tomsk railway station yesterday morning, just before the smell of 54 sweaty, sleepy travellers got the better of us. The ride was great fun - I was in the 3rd class compartment with 5 other backpackers and to be honest, we made the most of the cheap beer for sale on the platform and the plentiful noodles (although I am sick of the noodles now!). There were plenty of stops along the way so we could get out and haggle with the babushkas and we struck lucky - a lady on board asked me if I spoke English and hey presto, turned out she was Russian but now living in Canada, and helped us to buy lots of food - and ... read more
