What today offered was a deeper insight into the cultural history of the people of Lisbon. We joined a small walking tour for 2.5 hours and in that time walked many a kilometre, climbed and descended hundreds of steps, wound our way through narrow lanes and alleys, viewed and listened to the local people going about their daily lives as well as absorbing what our guide was telling us about the suburbs of Mouraria, the most multiethnic neighbourhood in the city and still very authentically, Lisbon, and also the birthplace of Fado, and Alfama, meaning ‘hot fountains‘ or ‘hot baths’ and is the oldest district of Lisbon spreading on the slope of between the Sao Jorge Castle and the Tagus River the part of the old city we toured through. These suburbs are definitely poor but ... read more

At 12pm the 50% mark of our trip ticked over. We celebrated in a park with a large, cold glass of StrongBow Cider. Later, Jane added to the celebrations with a wine from a vendor, “Wine with a View”. Today was about exploring Lisbon by using the Hop On Off bus which we did numerous times so as to walk to see the places of interest for us. We definitely put the kilometres into our legs today. Again, the sun shone strong and with the light coloured cobblestones, predominantly white walls of buildings the heat was definitely felt. The numerous parks with their large foliaged trees are many and not only do they add beauty to the city but give relief from the sun. From the “Parque Eduarde VII” we had a superb view to the ... read more

What a sensational one it was. Sat at a table to have dinner and Jane says, "I don't want to talk to anyone so don't interact with anyone." Going to be difficult me thinks as sitting next to us separated only by a chair are two gorgeous young women. Jane gets up to get her 2nd helping and one of the young women, now known as Kristin, from Germany, asks me a question. (Lee is from South Korea). Mmmmmm! Being polite and sociable and with Jane's warning... at the forefront of my mind, what else could I do but respond. Both speak numerous languages but not to be outdone we hold our own in English!! 2 hours later we conclude our conversation and exchange of vital communication mediums. We leave on a high and come across ... read more

Today was all about travelling to Lisbon. Waiting for the train we engaged in an informative dialogue with a café (small business) owner about the state of affairs in Portugal (not happy Jan). Not only was he a well-educated person but he had worked for the government and financial institutions in Portugal as well as the US. We were able to learn a few things as well as have a few affirmed. Australia, don’t complain. The first half of the train journey saw us in conversation with a young NZ couple heading to Canada on a 2 year working visa; he a journalist and she a nurse. We observe and engage with local people (travel = people, sights, food) to really try and find out about their culture/country. An observation that doesn’t require interaction is seeing ... read more

Today we had quite the eventful day! Our start was "early" rising at 10:00 am - no alarm style to begin our day. Completely integrated to Spanish/Portuguese time zones, we found a nice breakfast/lunch at Ti Camilia. We both had "cafe's" per Cody's order (AKA straight espresso, thanks Cody), and split a ham and cheese sandwich. Cody mentioned that Portugal is the dark horse of sandwiches. He did not expect such a "strong showing," but we are not disappointed! Although, the best European sandwich to date is Antico Vinao in Florence, Italy, thanks for the recommendation there Joe Buss! However, this sandwich was delectable, and a close second to Florence. :) Our first museum stop of the day was to the Museo de Fado (The Fado Museum). Albertina's husband (our new friends from yesterday), works there, ... read more

The train down from Porto was very comfortable. Halway towards Lisbon it clouded over and by the time we arrived at Oriente station it was raining. We negotiated the metro down to Cais de Sodré where we were able to store our bags while we waited for our friend to finish work. We got there a bit early so we popped over the road and had a quick drink in Hennesey's, an ex-pat Irish style pub with very expensive beer! The after work buzz was good though, and it's not something we often get the chance to do. Once we met up with Kev, he took us (via the Metro) to a traditional chicken grill restaurant, Restaurante Primavera. It was cheap and cheerful but an authentic Lisboa experience - just go easy on the fiery piri ... read more

After (easily) waking up at 4:15 am, since we both fell asleep so early last night, we rode in an Uber from our hotel in Madrid to the airport. The one major difference between our travels domestically and internationally is the fact that you have to board a bus to take you to the airplane. It's nice, though, because you have to load the plane up a flight of stairs making you feel like a local celebrity! Our flight arrived to Lisbon at 7:30 am Portugal time (Portugal is an hour ahead of Spain). We were not able to drop our bags off at our Airbnb until 11:30 am, so we took an Uber to a nearby spot to burn some time. Our Uber driver took us through the narrow hilly streets of Lisbon. Unfortunately, there ... read more

OK, maybe the late movie wasn't such a good idea but we all awoke in good moods. How could a train ride through the Portugal countryside make you sad? Glen and Karen left early to look for something at the Flea Market, and then they would meet us about an hour later in Sintra. Mike and I set off via Metro to the main train station in Rossio. Even in Portuguese, the trains and platforms were clearly marked. Our Metro cards also worked on the trains so no dealing with the ticket machines. Platform 3, 9:41am train! Easy peasy. Mike was happy to announce that the mosaic floors were "prison clean" with someone knowing their way around a buffer! After a pleasant ride, we got off at Sintra and went in search of the 434 bus ... read more

Saturday: Pouring rain in the morning, so we might as well use the time for Yoga, laundry, and organization of our digs. We found a laundromat to dry our wet clothes and a restaurant with take-away sandwiches. So far, quite a useful day. The rain can't last forever, can it? By 2p or so, the clouds start to break and the sun peeped out. Time to explore! Since our start was so delayed, today, Mike and I decided to go see three of my fave places: churches, parks, and cemeteries. When we arrived at the Estrela Basilica, there was a wedding exiting the church. As much as we wanted to be a part of the festivities, it would just be rude. Instead, we strolled through the lovely park across the street. Estrela Park is surrounded by ... read more
