Arrived in Lisbon, Portugal with no problems. At the apartment we have rented and getting last minute instructions on how things work along with where things are in the city. Will head out shortly to do some sightseeing. Probably be an early night as didn't get much sleep on the plane. Hopefully will get some photos posted tonight ... read more

Upon arrival to Lisbon, we took the subway from the airport to Bairo Alto's "Restauradores" station. Metro system is very easy to figure out and boy did we enjoy their comfy seating after 24 hrs of travel :) it's less than 2€ per ride, or you can get a daily pass for 6€ which allows you to hop on any public transportation (metro, bus, tram, elevador) Our first glimpse out of the metro was the Cervejaria Santiago and the cobble stone streets. To get to our apartment, we had to climb up the steep hill by foot, or -to our delight- ride the unique "elevador" that comfortably carries us up the hill. Truly a fun experience. Few steps up after our elevador ride, and we stumble on the "miraduro" (the look out) uncovering a stunning view ... read more

Arrived in Lisbon 9.00a.m. even though we were here in 2013 we were looking forward to our time here again, but took a while to dock as there was another cruise ship in port, eventually got out of the ship around 9.30 and then a few minutes walk to get out of the terminal, and there was beautiful Emanuel waiting for us, with his “I Hate Tourism Tours” sign, a gorgeous 34 year old Portuguese guy who was so passionate about his country, we love this, listening to people who just love their country so much. His Dad was an ambassador and diplomat and he has lived in France, Brussels and Portugal, so he has experienced living abroad. He whisked us away in the 9 seater van with 6 of us on board through the streets ... read more

We arrived in Lisbon by car, we drive our rental car to the airport and turn it in. We read driving in Lisbon is not a good idea. We took a taxi to our hotel, only 10 euros. We walked around looking for a store and a restaurant. We found a small store and bought cereal, milk, water and bananas. We prefer to eat a light breakfast in our room instead of eating out. We are hungry but we had a hard time finding a restaurant open, it was too early only six so we settled on the only place open and it was not great. We were happy to find the hotel had left us a small bottle of 10 year aged port in our room, how nice. This morning we headed to the metro ... read more

Since I haven’t been on a cruise since 1968 (SS Rotterdam, NY to Rotterdam, Heineken 5 cents), I wasn’t sure what to expect and I still am not sure. We scoped out the other passengers. They are mostly our age, really old, maybe older. But our cabin is really nice. We put everything away. Fran’s being a good sport and soon, we’ll leave the dock. In the meantime, we’ve had lifeboat drills, drinks, snacks, drinks snacks and a performance of Fado, music almost unique to Lisbon. There was a singer and two guitar players, one electric and one acoustic. The music is a bit sad and very emotional. The singer is sad and emotional and happens to be beautiful which helped me enjoy the sad, emotional music sung in a language that I don’t understand. I ... read more

Time for restaurant review and a little more. Last night, on the advice of our friend Barry, we took a car to Sesimbra, a small town on the coast, to have what our friend Barry said would be one of the best meals anywhere. The drive was about 40 minutes, due south, across the Golden Gate look alike bridge crossing the Tagus River, then into a wooded landscape that looks a little bit like north Florida or Georgia, flat with scrubby pine trees and oaks. As we approached the coast, the land grew hillier and we climbed steeply until we could see the coast and the Atlantic. As we descended to Sesimbra the view was spectacular. There is a marina with a diverse set of large motor yachts, dozens of sailboats from magnificent to modest, and ... read more

The sun is out and the temperature is about 18. It doesn't get much nicer than that. Today, we met Paulo, the only Jewish guide in Lisbon. This was planned. Our friends Howard and Becky recommended him. We met him at the Arch, down by the water and he gave us his family's story. He told us about his grandfather trying to get from Poland to Argentina during the war but getting caught up in Italy. He ended up spending the war hiding in a convent. After the war he met his wife and they remained in Italy. where his father was born His father was an engineer and was working in Lisbon which is where he met Paulo's mother. His mother came from a family in Portugal that traced back over 300 years but until ... read more

Hello again to those folks that are anxiously awaiting brilliant and incisive information about Lisbon and all the other places that I'm probably going to write about over the next week or so. Well, keep waiting, or go to Andrew Harper or Lonely Planet or Fodors. They're pros. I'm just an amateur not terribly interested in whether you gain any real knowledge by reading this. On the other hand, I'm not trying to sell books or hotel rooms. But as long as you're here, I'll bet you give me a minute or two and that's all I'm going to take. For those of you surprised to see this popping up on your screen, Fran and I are about to embark on our first cruise, a National Geographic trip from Lisbon to Barcelona with a bunch of ... read more

Twenty four hours have passed since daylight yesterday and as light came up today......nothing much has changed with the weather, just more drizzly rain. We are either going to have to do what we did yesterday and take on Lisbon in the rain or vegetate in the apartment. We waited and eventually as the morning passed the weather did show signs of improving and so we decided to make the drive into the city around 20km away and see what we could achieve by way of sightseeing. If we only did one thing then catching the #28 tram which is essentially a tourist tram would be our aim. As we headed down to the coastal N7 road that would take us into the city the sun started to break through the clouds out to sea and ... read more

We are starting to wonder if the weather gods might just be planning against us when it comes to visiting the ‘big’ attractions as we awoke this morning to steady light rain and a rather grey, sullen sky. Time first then for some administration and once breakfast was over it was time to tackle the front loader washing machine in the hope that we choose a cycle that won’t take half the day to complete. Mila obviously had her spot inside the back door where the washing machine was when it was raining. The hot water boiler was also there and it was nice and warm as well as dry. The only problem she is a big dog and Gretchen needed to share the space in getting the washing into the machine. While Gretchen is not ... read more
